Clear Spring squeaks past South By DAN KAUFFMAN / Staff Writer SMITHSBURG - Clear Spring boys soccer coach Matt Kinman enjoyed the effort of his Blazers in the first half of their Washington County Public Schools Tournament game against South Hagerstown on Saturday. Rebels coach James Aleshire felt pretty good himself after South mounted a late rally. Kinman and his Blazers left with the 2-1 victory, while Aleshire and his Rebels left confident that victories for South will eventually come.

ST. JAMES -- It took some convincing for Brady Burker to join the Saint James wrestling team. Saturday at the Holloway Tournament, it was Burker that did the convincing. The Saints heavyweight pinned Alex Renzi of St. Andrews in 54 seconds in the title bout to become the final champion of the afternoon and the lone champion for Saint James. "There was a lot of convincing from coaches and parents," Burker said. "They just said that they thought I would be good at it and it would be good for the team.

PREP BASEBALL Mercersburg Academy 7, Hill School 5 MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Winning pitcher Josh Edgin pitched a complete game with 11 strikeouts and hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning Sunday to lift Mercersburg Academy to a MAPL victory over The Hill School. Edgin, who gave the Blue Storm (3-0, 1-0) a 6-2 lead with his homer, finished with four RBI and allowed three walks and two earned runs. Garrett Fix had two hits and an RBI while Ryan colby had two hit. Josh Davis added a two-run homer in the third for Mercersburg.

The St. James junior, who's ranked second in the Maryland private-school state rankings at 171 pounds, bumped up a weight class Wednesday to take on Maret's Patrick Carr at 189 and got big results. Sutch teched out Carr 23-7 in 3:58 to improve to 15-0 on the season as the No. 6 Saints improved to 3-0 in the Mid Atlantic Conference (6-4 overall)

GIRLS SOCCER WILLIAMSPORT - Sarah Tritsch had a goal and an assist to lead No. 10 Williamsport to a 3-2 victory over Francis Scott Key on Wednesday. Morggan McGill and Kendal Moss each had a goal for the Wildcats (7-6-1), while Alluka Ogle-Moore had an assist and Rachel Smith had seven saves. Williamsport outshot FSK, 29-11. JV: Williamsport, 2-1. No. 5 Catoctin 1, Clear Spring 0 CLEAR SPRING - Alley Wivell scored the game's only goal on a free kick in the first half as Catoctin edged Clear Spring in the MVAL Antietam.

PREP FOOTBALL ST. JAMES - Scott Lehman rushed for 203 yards on 21 carries, including four touchdowns runs, to lead Maryland School for the Deaf to a 39-0 victory over St. James in the Saints' season opener. Orioles quarterback Brandon McMillan completed 4 of 5 passes for two touchdowns - 33 yards to Neal Thompson and 20 yards to Carey Heisey. Heisey also had five rushes for 130 yards for MSD (2-0). Junior Jimmy Sutch led the Saints (0-1) with 32 yards on nine carries.
