Two Washington County high school football teams will kick off postseason play this weekend. For one, it's a return to the playoffs after an extended layoff. For the other, it's becoming a routine. North Hagerstown (9-1) is in the postseason for the first time since 2006, qualifying as the No. 3 seed in Maryland Class 3A West. The Hubs will go on the road to face second-seeded Seneca Valley (9-1) at 7 p.m. Friday. North enters the playoffs on an eight-game winning streak after edging city rival South Hagerstown 14-12 last Friday night.

I have never been so embarrassed in all my life. I got a call to meet with the NFL commissioner the other day. I feel like I'm being called to the principal's office. I don't really know what he wants with me. I could be positive and figure he wants to commend me for my outstanding work in the world of football prognosticating. I've been an under recognized stalwart in that field for such a long time. Those Herald-Mail hacks don't know what they have. Maybe he wants to pick my brain to see just how I figure out so many games successfully.

For the Boonsboro girls, it's been since 1995. For the Williamsport boys, it's been even longer - 1975. And for the Boonsboro boys, it's never happened at all. But they all have reason to believe that the title runs will happen for them Saturday, as they try to capture the elusive team crowns at the Maryland State Cross Country Championships on Hereford High School's infamously hilly 3-mile course. Boonsboro, which will compete in Class 1A, will try to become the first Washington County school to win both girls and boys titles in the same year.

After a heartbreaking Monday loss against South Hagerstown knocked the Williamsport boys basketball team out of sole possession of the MVAL Antietam conference title, the Wildcats needed some good news heading into their last home game of the season. And boy, did they ever get it. Stephen Christy led the Wildcats’ Senior Night with 22 points as they mauled the Manchester Valley Mavericks, 76-45. Tuesday’s win gives Williamsport an undefeated 12-0 home record. “It was a nice way to bounce back after a disappointing loss yesterday,” said Williamsport coach Scott Mowbray.

The Smithsburg boys basketball team worked a two-for-one deal Friday night. Looking to finish off the week 3-0 and even its season record at 11-11, Smithsburg achieved both goals with a 92-65 victory over Manchester Valley on Senior Night. “We’ve been scoring, on fire,” said Smithsburg coach Eric Gerber. Granted, Smithsburg’s three opponents this week sport a combined won-lost mark of 13-52, but the Leopards went out and beat the teams they should beat.

Members of the Smithsburg wrestling team will say this one match didn't mean wany more than any other match. Even so, it was “gettin' even” time. And the Leopards didn't waste the opportunity. Smithsburg held its own and used five forfeit wins in a 48-35 MVAL Antietam victory over host Boonsboro to earn a measure of revenge on Saturday during the final segment of a tri-match, which included Manchester Valley. Manchester Valley swept the Washington County teams, defeating Smithsburg 46-30 and Boonsboro 57-18.

Smithsburg's No. 1-seeded and two-time defending Maryland Class 1A state champion volleyball team may have been a little rusty in its 2011 playoff opener Monday night against Manchester Valley in the 1A West quarterfinals. Playing for the first time in 13 days, Smithsburg had to persevere through two competitive games to start and end the match. The Leopards won their 11th straight playoff contest, 25-22, 25-13, 25-20. Smithsburg (13-2) will host Southern Garrett in the 1A West semifinals on Wednesday night at 6. “I think it's tough when you haven't played for two weeks,” Smithsburg coach Rachel Brashear said.
