LEITERSBURG - Want to appear ghastly this Halloween? The Herald-Mail asked Michael Maginnis and Jeremy Snowberger, longtime volunteers at Leitersburg Haunted House, to share some tips and explain how they do their makeup for the haunted house. Maginnis, 27, of Hagerstown, is the son of Herald-Mail employees Bob and Sandy Maginnis. He said he spent more than $1,000 on props, makeup and costumes to scare horror fans of all ages at this year's haunted house. HAGERSTOWN - It took as much as an hour to style hair and apply makeup, and another hour of posing and lighting adjustments, but about 15 Washington County Technical High School students were able to recreate the past. Students from the school's digital communications and cosmetology classes collaborated to recreate images of well-known stars of the 1930s, 1940s and early 1950s. John Jones, a digital communications teacher, said the project has lasted several weeks. "We're using our modern technology trying to replicate what was done 60 years ago," he said.

Peek into the makeup bag of the reigning Miss Washington County, Whitney Colombo, and you'll likely find a special foundation and loose powder that covers an area of discolored skin near the left corner of her smile. Colombo has hypopigmentation, a condition characterized by patches of skin that appear much lighter than the rest of her olive-toned skin. "Of all the places, I have to have it on my face," said Colombo, 17, of Hagerstown. But does she allow that to knock her confidence?

The Washington County Board of Education approved several appointments, and lengthened some current members' appointments, for an advisory committee that makes recommendations regarding redistricting. The school board voted 6-0 on Tuesday to appoint seven people to the Facilities and Enrollment Advisory Committee. Board member Wayne Ridenour abstained from the vote on the new committee members. Ridenour said Thursday he abstained because of a personal bias. Board member Melissa Williams did not abstain, although one of the new appointees, Jennifer Ashbaugh, had served as her campaign treasurer.

There will be differing viewpoints of Hagerstown's proposed downtown multiuse sports and events center when the new city council is sworn in later this month. “The current proposal, I'm totally against it,” said Penny Nigh, who totaled the second-most votes, 6,477, with all precincts reporting Tuesday night plus early voting results. “I think that if anything should be done, it should be at the old location,” she said, referring to Municipal Stadium on East Memorial Boulevard.

Saying they were “flabbergasted” at the idea, speakers at a public hearing Tuesday afternoon objected to having noncounty residents serve on the Washington County Economic Development Commission and other government boards. The EDC, which recommends policies to help attract and sustain employment, is exempted from the county residency requirement that applies to other local boards and commissions - as long as all of its members are employed by or affiliated with business entities with substantial presence in the county.

A cave along Cresspond Road where a man became trapped Tuesday has tight passages that are only about a foot high and other sections where cave explorers must turn their bodies sideways to pass through, a member of a caving group said Wednesday. At the entrance of Schetromph Cave, the passage drops down 6 to 8 feet, then goes forward about 6 feet, according to Jerry Bowen, of Tri-State Grotto, a Martinsburg, W.Va.-based caving organization that assisted crews in Tuesday's difficult rescue.

I was recently asked what I like most about my job. My answer was that every day is different, and the wide variety of people with whom I get to work. I used the example that in the previous week, I had consultations with a dairy farmer, a family working to transition to the next generation, a shepherd whose day job is at NIH and an aspiring blueberry grower who is an administrator at a local college. While these folks might seem very different, they are also greatly similar.

Changes to Pennsylvania's legislative districts will slice up Franklin County and divide it among several politicians. On Monday, the state Legislative Reapportionment Commission approved its final maps, which are based on population changes found in 2010 Census data. Redistricting is required every 10 years by the U.S. Constitution. State Rep. Todd Rock, a Republican, said his 90th House District in southern Franklin County gained 9,000 people in the past decade. Because of that, the geographical boundaries of his district will shrink.
