Fourth-grader Joseph Fouke has a beef with school cheeseburgers. Some other students attending Washington County Public Schools called for the new superintendent to visit the schools. Before Clayton M. Wilcox was named the new superintendent for Washington County Public Schools, The Herald-Mail asked several students, if they could sit down with the new superintendent and have one wish granted, what would it be? Thirty-two students were interviewed at Clear Spring High School, at Western Heights Middle School in Hagerstown's West End and at Old Forge Elementary School west of Smithsburg.

Student lunch prices in the Waynesboro Area School District could increase 20 cents in the 2011-12 academic year if the school board agrees with a proposal presented to it Tuesday. Student lunch prices would be $2 for elementary schools and $2.15 for secondary schools, compared to the current $1.80 and $1.95, respectively. Breakfast would remain $1 for elementary students and $1.10 for secondary students. The school board talked about the proposal at its meeting Tuesday, but asked for more information before voting.

In today's world of high-stress, high-demand jobs, it can sometimes be difficult to remember the importance of practicing healthy habits while at work.   Whether you sit at a desk, work behind a counter or are on your feet all day, incorporating good nutrition and physical activity into your workday can make a big difference in your work performance, energy and stress level, as well as your overall health. Start your workday with breakfast. You'll replenish your body's blood sugar stores, which are needed for sustained mental work and physical activity throughout the day. You'll also stave off mid-morning hunger that may reduce your concentration.

In one of its few victories, if that's the word, some members of the Washington County legislative delegation helped derail an attempt to spread the cost of a new home for Hagerstown's Antietam Fire Co. among all Maryland taxpayers. So instead, if City Hall goes through with its current plans, we local taxpayers will be responsible for the cost all by ourselves. This has to be a proud moment for our delegation: They get to posture for the masses about how fiscally responsible they are, even though it actually increases our own local tax burden.

Hunger knows no holiday, but the hunger of more than 200 people was sated on Good Friday with a luncheon cooked and served at the Salvation Army by volunteers from Hagerstown Community College. "It's a holiday and normally we'd be closed, but the students volunteered to come in," said Ruth Williams, the kitchen manager. Friday was her day to be served rather than serve, along with the volunteers who regularly prepare the meals for 150 or more people every weekday. Eight minutes after the kitchen opened there were more than 100 people already seated, with the HCC students' sociology instructor Daniel Madron passing out plastic ware, drinks and plates with thick-sliced ham, mash potatoes, stuffing, corn and green beans with fruit cups and pies for dessert.

I remember one day when I was in the eighth grade at the old Boonsboro Middle School. It was a time for mischief, and some fun at the expense of the substitute teacher in a social studies class. I never had an opinion on corporal punishment in high school, until the events of this day unfolded. I can’t remember all the things we had for school lunch that day, but one food item I do remember well was raisins. I didn’t eat the raisins at lunch but placed them in my shirt pocket for later use. At 1 p.m., we had our first afternoon class.
