HAGERSTOWN ? Three South Hagerstown High School students were taken to the hospital Monday and three others were charged with criminal offenses after chemicals were put on a student's lunch. School officials learned about 1 p.m. Monday that diluted hydrochloric acid was put on a student's lunch at South Hagerstown High, according to Washington County Public Schools spokesman Will Kauffman. The chemical mixture was taken from a chemistry classroom at the school, he said. Three students who ate some of the contaminated food were taken by ambulance to Washington County Hospital.

Craig to make June 3 announcement For months, speculation has been rife that Republican David R. Craig, the Harford County executive, would make a run for governor in 2014. Supporters will have to wait until June 3 to find out, said Josh Wolf, political director for Craig. Wolf said Craig will make an announcement at his house that day. That's the same day Craig is scheduled to be in Hagerstown “for an important discussion regarding the future of Maryland.” The Hagerstown event will take place at 7 p.m. at Bulls & Bears restaurant at 38 S. Potomac St. in downtown Hagerstown.

HALFWAY - The Olive Garden restaurant at 17410 Valley Mall Road will open Monday at 4 p.m. The 247-seat, 7,399-square-foot restaurant, which serves Italian cuisine, is opening for dinner during its first week and will be open for lunch and dinner the following week. During the first week, the restaurant will be open from 4 to 10 p.m. Monday to Thursday and from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The restaurant will be open for lunch beginning Monday, Jan. 21. Lunch will be served starting at 11 a.m. every day. Jason Rakaczewski of Greencastle, Pa., is general manager of the restaurant.

The Manor Church Senior Citizens Club held its St. Patrick's Day meeting March 4. Ruth Smith, the club president, welcomed members and guests. The Rev. Joy Zepp returned thanks, and the day began with a covered dish lunch. The lunch special was sauerkraut and mashed potatoes, furnished by Patsy and Michael Boward and served by Charlotte Dixon. Others serving at the lunch table were Ruth Shank, Josephine Palmer and Mildred Shank. Following lunch, the business meeting was called to order with the Pledge of Allegiance.

Soroptimist International of Hagerstown held its annual Christmas party at Walnut Towers on Dec. 2. Approximately 50 residents participated in the merry making, which included lunch, bingo, crafts and entertainment.

Williamsport High School's Sophisti'Cats will host a basket bingo Sunday, April 27, at the Williamsport Fire Hall. The Washington County Community Mediation Center is seeking volunteer mediator applicants, including those ages 13 to 17, for a free upcoming basic 50-hour mediation training course. Participants must make a commitment to complete the entire 50 hours of training, and must agree to volunteer at least 75 hours to support the center and its programs. Volunteer hours from students may be applied to Student Service Learning credits toward graduation. Participants must attend a mandatory orientation on Wednesday, Sept.

A surprise 50th anniversary celebration was held for Susan and Dick Lohman on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013, at the Hagerstown Church of the Nazarene with family and friends in attendance. The Lohmans were married on Dec. 29, 1962, at Zion Reformed United Church of Christ in Hagerstown by the Rev. Arthur Grove. The celebration lunch was hosted by their family, Brenda Lohman, Rich Lohman and his wife, Debbie, and grandchildren, Randy and Bethany. The Lohmans also celebrated their anniversary with a vacation in Myrtle Beach, S.C., with the entire family.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - A Chambersburg man was sentenced Wednesday to one year in Franklin County Prison and 10 years on probation for beating a man who had taken the attacker's girlfriend to lunch. "When two people decide to fight the loser goes to the hospital and the winner goes to jail," President Judge John Walker told Jeremy Allen Mayer, 20, of 127 Lincoln Way West. Walker quickly added that the victim, Michael Edward Beard of Greencastle, Pa., had not done anything to provoke the fight.
