SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 81 calls for service in May, bringing the 2006 total to 454 as of the end of the month. Of the 81 calls, six were to Frederick County, Md., and three were to Franklin County, Pa., according to Capt. James Ulrich. Twelve calls were in Smithsburg town limits while another 15 were to Leitersburg and six calls were to the Mount Aetna area. The most common type of call during the month was vehicle accidents, accounting for 14 responses.

Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services had 97 calls for service in July. Of those calls, 15 were to Frederick County, Md., four to Franklin County, Pa., and one to Adams County, Pa. Fifteen calls were in the Smithsburg town limits, 10 in the Mount Aetna area, eight in the Cascade area, seven in the Leitersburg area, and five to the Hagerstown area. The most common call types, 31, were for trouble breathing and vehicle accidents. A total of 54 patients were taken to Washington County Hospita, three were taken to Waynesboro Hospital and two were taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services handled 100 calls during the month of August, according to Capt. James Ulrich. Of those calls, 10 were to Frederick County, Md., and 10 were to Franklin County, Pa. A total of 23 calls were in the Smithsburg town limits, 11 calls were in the Mount Aetna area, eight were in the Cascade area and 11 calls were in the Leitersburg area. The most common call was for medical emergencies and chest pain, which accounted for 23 calls.

During September, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services (SEMS) responded to 81 calls for service, bringing the 2008 total to 806 calls as of Oct. 1. There were 25 calls within Smithsburg town limits and eight calls to the Leitersburg area. The Mount Aetna area call volume increased to 11 calls, while the four calls to Cascade and Pen Mar were about average. Mutual-aid calls to neighboring counties included eight to Frederick County, Md., and three to Franklin County, Pa. During peak call volumes in other areas of the county, SEMS provided transfer crews to Boonsboro Ambulance and Rescue and Community Rescue Service.

The busiest day of the month was Saturday, June 12, when there were eight emergency calls, according to Capt. James Ulrich. Of the 72 calls for June, eight were to Frederick County, Md., and five went to Franklin County, Pa. Eight calls were in the Smithsburg town limits and 11 calls were in the Mount Aetna area. There were seven calls to the Cascade area, and five to the Leitersburg area.

SMITHSBURG - In the month of October, Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 94 calls for service, bringing the 2005 total to 960 responses as of Oct. 31, according to Capt. Jim Ulrich. One call was to Frederick County, Md., and one was to Franklin County, Pa. There were 38 calls in the Smithsburg town limits, while another 15 calls were in the Hagerstown area. Two calls were in the Cascade area and there were seven calls in the Mount Aetna area. Another nine calls were to the Leitersburg area.

SMITHSBURG - Smithsburg Emergency Medical Services personnel responded to 18 motor vehicle, motorcycle and pedestrian accidents in the month of May, among a total of 99 calls for the month. During May, 25 calls were within Smithsburg town limits and 14 calls were in the Leitersburg area. There were four calls to the Mount Aetna area and another six in Cascade and Pen Mar. Mutual-aid calls included seven to Frederick County and three to Franklin County, Pa. An additional 11 calls were in the Hagerstown area and five calls were in the Boonsboro area.

“I think it's fine that Hagerstown, Washington County, has these events and goings-on on the weekends; say, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Saturday and Sunday. Now, that might raise some money, some interest in the area for a short while, for a couple of days at the most, but what our city and county leaders need to understand is, we need something Monday through Friday, as in businesses and incoming money to those businesses. Big or small, that's what we need.
