Legal secretary running for circuit clerk By DON AINES Staff Writer, Martinsburg MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Berkeley County Circuit Clerk Virginia M. Sine will face at least one opponent in the May 12 Democratic primary. Legal secretary Nancy P. Burkhart, 39, of Martinsburg, said Wednesday she will file to run against Sine in the primary. "I feel I have the background, the hands-on experience and the energy to deal with certain problems and the needs of the public in every aspect that the office of the circuit clerk requires," Burkhart said.

Hagerstown City Councilman Lewis C. Metzner was awake and doing well Thursday afternoon after having two stents put in his right coronary artery earlier in the day, Fran Graves, Metzner's legal secretary, said Thursday. If all goes well, Metzner could be back home in Hagerstown late today, Graves said. During planned medical tests Thursday, doctors found Metzner's right coronary artery 100 percent blocked, Graves said. The medical procedures were performed at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md., she said.

The Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday approved the appointment of Vicki Lumm as the new county clerk. She succeeds Joni Bittner, who is retiring July 1 after serving as county clerk for more than 28 years. Lumm has worked in the county attorney's office as legal secretary since 1998. In making the appointment, Commissioners' President John F. Barr lauded Bittner for her service and dedication to local government and the citizens of Washington County. County Administrator Gregory Murray echoed those sentiments, adding that Lumm has assisted the clerk on many issues over the years, and is "well versed in the requirements of the position.

A new clerk has started working with the Washington County Commissioners. Vicki C. Lumm was sworn in Tuesday, replacing Joni Bittner, who retired July 1 after 28 years. Lumm was a legal secretary in the county attorney's office for 10 years. Lumm, 54, is a lifelong Washington County resident. She graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1973 and has a paralegal certificate from Hagerstown Community College. Lumm said she has a son, Brian, who is 29. Another son died.

Ruthanna Ridenour, 83, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Williamsport Nursing Home in Williamsport, Md. Born Dec. 9, 1929, in Williamsport, she was the daughter of the late Edgar and Agnes Taylor Brant. She was of the Protestant faith. She worked as a legal secretary when she was younger. Ruthanna also had a short singing career on a local radio station. She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Ridenour; a daughter, Teresa Holloway and husband, Ronald, of Delaware; a son, J. Brant Ridenour and wife, Darlene, of Hagerstown; and one grandchild, Joseph Holloway; one niece, Ellen Brant and one nephew Chris South and brother-in-law-Charles South.

Mrs. Patricia A. Padula (Patsy Forrest), 73, of Branson, Mo., went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 8, 2013. Patricia Ann Padula was born Jan. 23, 1940, in Hagerstown, Md., to Austin and Vera (Myers) Forrest. She was a legal secretary during her lifetime in Hagerstown. Patricia retired to Florida, then moved to Branson about five years ago. She had attended St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Funkstown, Md., and Faith Life Church in Branson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Padula; and her parents.

JUNE 18, 1937-AUG. 7, 2010 WILLIAMSPORT, Md. - B. Joanne Snyder, 73, of Williamsport, Md., died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2010, at Washington County Hospital, Hagerstown, Md. Born June 18, 1937, in Williamsport, to the late Harold Leonard and Bernice Maxine Betts Swope. She was a 1955 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was employed as a legal secretary with Mackley, Gilbert & Marks Attorneys at Law of Hagerstown, for 44 years until retiring in 1999. She was a member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church, Williamsport, for 60-plus years.

Susan was well-known within the insurance adjustors community, having been in the business for many years. Born in Hagerstown, Md., on June 25, 1954, Susan attended North Hagerstown High School, graduating with the class of 1972. She attended Hagerstown Business School, graduating as a legal secretary.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Franklin County elected officials and departments are requesting additional personnel as the Board of County Commissioners began holding hearings on the 2007 budget. District Attorney John F. Nelson on Tuesday outlined his request for a sentencing guidelines coordinator, a pretrial county detective and another legal secretary, as well as adjusted salaries for assistant district attorneys. The November trial term began last week with about 470 cases listed, many continued from previous trial terms.

Dorothy attended Jackson College and was a graduate of Chandler Secretarial College in Boston.

That's why, even in the age of computers, many teachers still read aloud with students in the classroom. In an article published in NW Education Magazine in 1998, Catherine Paglin of the Northwest Regional Educational Laboratory wrote that reading aloud to children not only teaches them that it is an enjoyable activity, but it also improves their vocabulary and comprehension.
