LA PLATA, Md. - Latoya Buckner had 20 points, 10 rebounds and three steals as Hagerstown Community College remained undefeated with an 87-68 Maryland JuCo Conference victory over Southern Maryland on Friday. Amy Rhoderick scored eight of her 12 points in the final eight minutes of the first half as the Hawks built a 48-28 halftime advantage. Cara Thompson and Teonna Jewell each had five assists for the Hawks (18-0, 9-0). HCC outrebounded Southern Maryland, 45-27. Chantal Hebron scored 25 points, while Tanya Sites added 17 points for Southern Maryland.

Guns, explosives, meth lab found in La Plata home LA PLATA, Md. (AP) - A cache of guns and explosives, a methamphetamine lab and literature from an anti-government group were found at the home of a La Plata man, police said. Lawrence Fox, 23, was arrested Tuesday after co-workers at Belk Department Store in California, Md., said that he had a handgun on store property, according to charging documents in District Court in St. Mary's County. When police searched Fox's car, they found two handguns and almost 200 rounds of ammunition, a biochemical suit and a ski mask, according to Cpl. William Rosado, spokesman for the St. Mary's County Bureau of Criminal Investigation.

John Lee Warnes, of Waldorf, Md., and formerly of Hagerstown, Md., died Friday, Aug. 3, 2012, at the Genesis Healthcare Center in La Plata, Md. He was 65 years old. State volleyball finals have not been kind to North Hagerstown. The Hubs have played for a state championship four times - in 1993, 1997, 1998 and 2007 - only to walk off the court dejected after a loss each time. North's fifth opportunity arrives this evening, when the Hubs (16-2) face River Hill (16-1) at 7:30 for the Class 3A title at the University of Maryland's Ritchie Coliseum in College Park. “They're so excited and I think they're ready,” North coach Megan Crawford said Friday.

-JULY 19, 2010 MARBURY, Md. - George D. Eccard Sr., 82, of Marbury, Md., died Monday, July 19, 2010. Born in Mount Lena, Md., he was the son of the late David C. Eccard and Olive M. (Fischer) Eccard. George was a 1946 graduate of Boonsboro High School. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie A. Eccard; his two sons, George Eccard Jr. and David Eccard; his daughter, Suzanne (Eccard) Bailey; his brother, Claude "Brother" W. Eccard; and his sister, Carol Ann Carter.

APRIL 22, 1945-DEC. 9, 2008 HANCOCK - William Henry "Bill" Dean Jr., 63, of Hancock, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, at his home. Born April 22, 1945, in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Edna P. Payne Dean of Charles County, Md., and the late William Henry Dean Sr. He was a 1964 graduate of Frederick Sasscer High School and received a bachelor of science degree from Coppin State College. He was employed by Washington County Commissioners as superintendent of operations for Washington County Department of Water Quality.

Mary Ethel (Holbert) Smith, of Cedar Lawn near Hagerstown, Md., died Wednesday afternoon at NMS Healthcare. She had been diagnosed with an inoperable glioblastoma brain tumor on Nov. 6, 2010. Born May 7, 1937, in Parkersburg, W.Va., she was the youngest daughter of the late P. Tell and Della D. (McClung) Holbert of Parkersburg and Clear Spring, Md. Mary graduated from Clear Spring High School in 1955 and Hagerstown Medical Secretarial School. Mary married her husband, Roger H. Smith, shortly before finishing HMSS.
