Gary Keith Spielman, 57, of Hagerstown, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012, at his home. Born Sept. 26, 1954, in Hagerstown, he was the son of Janet Carmeleta (Wiegand) Spielman of Maugansville and the late Donald Richard Spielman. Gary was a 1972 graduate of South Hagerstown High School and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Baltimore in 1983 and his Master of Business Administration Degree from Frostburg State University in 1990.

Kaplan University provides a quality education To the editor: An Aug. 28 story in The Herald-Mail seemed to suggest that for-profit institutions, like Kaplan University, do not provide a high-quality education. The article quoted Hagerstown Community College President Guy Altieri as stating that "there are much better transfer options" for HCC graduates to consider than Kaplan. We understand that Altieri is entitled to his opinions, but we feel that the community should be aware of the rigorous education and unique academic opportunities offered at Kaplan University.

The 81st commencement in Kaplan University-Hagerstown's history was its largest, President W. Christopher Motz said. The spring class that graduated Saturday at North Hagerstown High School had a record 284 graduates. The school has been around for 73 years, as Kaplan University, Kaplan College, Hagerstown Business College, Maryland Medical Secretarial School and National Legal Secretarial School, according to the commencement program. The school currently holds graduation twice a year.

D.M. Bowman Inc. WILLIAMSPORT - Anthony Triggs recently was promoted to operations manager of the Williamsport terminal of D.M. Bowman Inc. Triggs has been with D.M. Bowman Inc. for 13 years. He has held positions in both operations and safety, which will aid in the development of the operating staff in accident prevention and regulatory compliance. Triggs holds a bachelor's degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing from Shepherd University. Volvo Powertrain North America Ron Divelbiss, a maintenance mechanic, was named Employee of the Month for August at Volvo Powertrain North America.

HAGERSTOWN -- Kaplan College is now called Kaplan University Hagerstown. "We have arrived," W. Christopher Motz, president of the university, told dozens of dignitaries and guests during a ceremonial unveiling of the school's new name Tuesday afternoon at the Crestwood Drive campus. The school started as Hagerstown Business College in 1938 and was acquired by Kaplan Higher Education in 2000, said Jeffrey J. Conlon, president and chief executive officer of the organization.

The 22nd class of Leadership Washington County recently held its graduation ceremony at Beaver Creek Country Club. The mission of the program is to provide additional leadership training and community immersion for people identified as accomplished in their business, nonprofit and/or government sectors. The program began in 1987 and has graduated more than 600 people who have served on boards, run for public office and taken on leadership roles in the community.
