Ambulance authority nets $1.3 million loan The Jefferson County Ambulance Authority has been approved to receive a $1.3 million community facilities loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development program to build a new operations facility, state director Rick E. Rice announced Friday. "Rural Development funds will be used to construct a new emergency operations facility at Fairfax Crossing in Ranson, W.Va.," Rice said in a news release. WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Plenty of tickets are available for Saturday's annual Breakfast in Waynesboro at the Eagles Club on Main Street. The breakfast runs from 9 to 10 a.m., while John Shindledecker will host a live Christmas-themed show from 10 to 11 a.m. that will be broadcast live on WJEJ 1240. Proceeds from the breakfast will go toward buying a new K-9 for the Waynesboro Police Department. WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Thanks in part to a $1,000 donation, the Waynesboro Police Department on Monday reached 40 percent of its fundraising goal to purchase a new dog trained for narcotics searches. The department had used the services of Ex since 2000, but recently lost the shepherd to bone cancer. Nearly $12,000 will be needed to purchase a new dog, which has already been ordered from Castle's K-9 of Mechanicsburg, Pa. "They supply dogs all over the world. They pick specific dogs from litters," Cpl. John Shindledecker said, adding that he has been told the new puppy will likely come from Holland.

MARLOWE, W.Va. - An armed robbery was reported Friday night at the BP/Rocs gas station in Marlowe, according to a Berkeley County Sheriff's Department press release. A man wearing a mask robbed the store at gunpoint about 11 p.m., deputies said. The man took an undisclosed amount of money from the cash register and fled, deputies said. Sheriff's department deputies, along with a K-9 unit from the Martinsburg Police Department, checked the area for the suspect, but were unable to find him, deputies said.

Night Out "Take the 'bite' out of crime" is a motto sometimes used by law enforcement. On Tuesday, that "bite" was demonstrated in Hancock's Widmeyer Park to several hundred citizens as the K-9 trainers from Hagerstown's Maryland Correctional Training Center showed the power of their young "attack" dog. This demonstration was only one of many informational sites set up in the park for Hancock's ninth annual National Night Out Against Crime....

ST. THOMAS, Pa. -- Reports of an armed man with bloody clothing sent state troopers, a police helicopter and K-9 teams searching an area of St. Thomas Township on Wednesday, ending in the capture of a man who had killed a porcupine and argued with his girlfriend, Pennsylvania State Police said. Joshua Robert Shatzer, 24, of 2685 Appleway, was charged with possession with intent to deliver marijuana, possession of marijuana, public drunkenness, criminal mischief and disorderly conduct, according to Magisterial District Judge Kelly Rock's office.

Cayman still had a puppy's energy and was as curious as ever, while she waited in the visitor area at Roxbury Correctional Institution for an opportunity to show the media how she works. Those are good attributes for a dog trained to detect drugs such as heroin, cocaine and marijuana in a state prison complex that houses approximately 6,300 inmates. Cayman is one of six dogs from the first litter of 12 black Labrador retrievers that were bred at the K-9 headquarters. The local breeding program began in 2006 in an attempt to cut costs and create a steady supply of high-quality drug-detection dogs in the face of a national increase in demand for detection dogs following the Sept.

Block party was a success To the editor: The excitement began early in the day as Wayne Durban began moving the picnic tables to Hagerstown's Ray Street with his tow truck and neighbors started preparing for the block party. The member of the Locus Point Group are grateful for all the help they received to make the event a successful one. As soon as the Rev. Berry of Full Life Family Ministries asked God's blessing for the community, food became the main concern.
