Sachs-Stottlemyer Amy Lewis Stottlemyer and Stephen M. Sachs were married Saturday, June 20, 1998, at Mount Bethel United Methodist Church in Foxville, Md. The bride is the daughter of W. Melvin and Mary M. Lewis of Smithsburg. The bridegroom is the son of Theron and Marti Sachs of Mount Union, Pa., and the late Betty M. Sachs. The bride is a 1984 graduate of Middletown High School and a 1987 graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing.

The following local students were awarded degrees May 14 at Juniata College’s commencement. • Sara Marie Bean of Greencastle, Pa., graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of arts degree in communication with art and design. Bean wrote an honors thesis in conjunction with her Juniata College marketing internship, and won first place in the college’s annual student art exhibition. Bean is a 2007 graduate of Greencastle-Antrim High School. • Caroline Ann Binder of McConnellsburg, Pa., graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in theater arts with secondary emphases in history and French.

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata College board of trustees has added six new members to begin the 2008-09 academic year, including David Beachley of Hagerstown. Beachley, a 1977 Juniata graduate and native of Hagerstown, is president of Beachley Furniture Co. Inc. Beachley returns to the board after completing a two-year term as a replacement church trustee. Beachley started his business career in 1970, working summers at the family furniture business. After graduation from Juniata, he joined the company full-time in the accounting/purchasing department.

Nine Williamsport High School juniors recently attended a Rotary Youth Leadership Academy (RYLA) at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., according to a Williamsport Rotary press release. Juniors attending the event were Christi Gagnon, Hailee Growden, Eddie Schubel, Samantha Sines, Patrick Hammond, Julie Cook, Tonya Campbell, Zac Burger and Alicia Domsky. The students received scholarships from the Rotary Club of Williamsport to attend the event, according to the release. The academy is an intensive training program for community youth leaders, according to the release.

Three local high school students will attend a leadership camp, sponsored by Rotary Clubs in the Tri-State area. The Rotary Club of Long Meadows is sponsoring Taylor Coombs of North Hagerstown High School, Aaron Anderson of Heritage Academy and Giselle Garnett of North High, to attend Rotary Young Leader Awards at the Juniata College campus in June. Attendees will be trained in leadership skills and group-building exercises. At the completion of the course, the students present a final project to show what they have learned during their four days at camp.

Hannah House of Clear Spring High School has been selected to participate in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program. The conference will be held at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., June 14 to 17. The Hagerstown (Downtown) Rotary Club will sponsor Hannah. At Clear Spring High School, she is involved with the student government association, serves as a reporter for the Future Farmers of America, is involved with the Future Business Leaders of America, the Huyetts 4-H Club and has been active in sports, including volleyball, basketball and track.

Warren Speleos and Connor Gilchrist, students at Smithsburg High School, recently attended a Rotary program called RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Academy) that introduced teens to leadership concepts. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Long Meadows, Speleos and Gilchrist participated in the program at Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa., from June 13 to 16. Those chosen to participate in the program heard presentations and participated in such activities as a business venture competition and team-building games with other young people sponsored by other Rotary clubs throughout the area.
