A Hagerstown man was sentenced Monday in Washington County Court to 18 months in the county detention center for his role in a series of burglaries last fall. Richard Dalton Vanes, 20, of 17328 Diane Drive, pleaded guilty to theft between $10,000 and $100,000 before Judge M. Kenneth Long Jr., who sentenced him to 7 1/2 years in prison, suspending all but 18 months to be served locally. Vanes also was given five years of supervised probation and ordered to pay restitution of more than $14,000.

Firefighters battle blaze near Noland Village Firefighters were battling a blaze Sunday night in an abandoned house on Linwood Road in Hagerstown. The fire, which was reported at 10:04 p.m., was at 1113 Linwood Road, officials said. Youths have been getting into the house, which is behind Noland Village, a Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman said. Kearneysville man airlifted following crash CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - A man was airlifted to Winchester (Va.)
