andrews@herald-mail.com The answer was right there in the book of Genesis. "Eureka!" Jim Brown said, and he went off to build the ARCC. The crowd assembled to salute Brown laughed at Richard W. Phoebus' clever comparison of Brown's ARCC - the Athletic, Recreation and Convocation Center at Hagerstown Community College - and Noah's ark. "Let me tell you - this dwarfs Noah's job," Phoebus said. Brown, who served many years as the men's basketball coach, athletic director and head athletic complex administrator at HCC, retired last year.

Barry Brown had lot of time to think. His mind raced last month while riding a bus half way across country with the Hagerstown Community College men's basketball team as they returned from the NJCAA national tournament in Hutchinson, Kan. He knew he and his staff did everything in their power to help get the Hawks to their first national appearance since 1994. Then he realized … it wasn't enough. And with that, it became more apparent. He really didn't have much more he could give and so it was time to step down.
