Saxophonist Brian Lenair will be the featured performer at the second annual Doleman Black Heritage Museum fundraiser, an effort to help bring the collection of the late Marguerite Doleman to light. Lenair will perform at "An Evening of Jazz and Unveiling" set for Oct. 25 at the University System Maryland at Hagerstown. The event is tied to attempts to create a museum to house the thousands of artifacts Doleman displayed throughout her home, which she used as both a museum and living space.

ยท Highlights of John Brown 150th Commemoration HARPERS FERRY, W.Va. - Delfeayo Marsalis' family obviously has a strong musical background. His father is legendary jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis and two of his brothers, Wynton and Branford, are well-known musicians. "My family believes strongly in history," as well as education, Delfeayo Marsalis said during a recent phone interview. So, for Marsalis, it's an honor to be invited to participate in this weekend's John Brown 150th Commemoration at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Frank Voltz, jazz harpist, organist, pianist and composer, will present a harp and organ concert at St. John's Lutheran Church on Saturday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. Voltz performs all types of music, from classical to contemporary. No tickets are needed, but a freewill offering will be accepted to help cover expenses. The church is across from the library on South Potomac Street. Yard sale Hagerstown First Church of God will hold a yard sale Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. A chicken barbecue will be from 11 a.m. until sold out. The menu includes half a chicken, baked potato, green beans and roll for $7. Proceeds will benefit the building fund. The church is at 1015 Rose Hill Avenue. Jazz a 'vacation' for hundreds at Renfrew

View the Slideshow WAYNESBORO, Pa. -- Some used the word jazz to describe the soothing tones wafting from Renfrew Park on Sunday. "Bmmmp, baaah. Bmmmp, baaah. Bmmp skiddlie de-dah do wah. Bmmmp, baaah. " Not Miriam Dorsey of Marriottsville, Md. No, to her, the melody was more than a song. "This is my therapy. My vacation. My solace," she said closing her eyes. "Oh yeah. " More than 800 people joined in Dorsey's sunny therapy session Sunday, also known as Renfrew Institute's 18th annual Jazz Festival.

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - Sax, guitar, piano, drums, organ? An organ probably isn't the first thing to come to mind when one things of jazz music. "Unfortunately a lot of people feel that way. The organ has not gotten the respect it deserves in the jazz world," said Joey DeFrancesco. DeFrancesco is one of the guest musicians for this Sunday's Renfrew Jazz Festival. He plays the organ, specifically a Hammond B-3. "A lot more players are doing it. It's become a very big, important sound in jazz," said DeFrancesco, who grew up in Philadelphia, but has lived in Arizona the past 10 years.

HAGERSTOWN -- Due to inclement weather, today's City Center Jazz Nights concert will be moved indoors to Bulls and Bears, 38 S. Potomac St., the City of Hagerstown announced. Carl Filipiak and Jimi Jazz are the featured artists in the first event in the free concert series, scheduled for 5 to 6:30 p.m. Filipiak, a native of Baltimore, has released seven critically acclaimed cd's and has published a highly celebrated book called "Rock-Fusion Improvising. " Carl Filipiak and the Jimi Jazz Band's latest album, "I Got Your Mantra," features eight original songs and two classic covers.
