FREDERICK, Md. - The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently awarded music scholarships to area elementary, middle and high school students. Each scholarship has a specific purpose and offers residents a chance to continue vocal or instrumental training. The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship Fund, which offers scholarships to Frederick County residents in kindergarten through 11th grade for private instruction in vocal or instrumental music performance, was awarded for the 2008-09 academic year to: o Carrie Holter, a sophomore at Middletown High School, who attends violin lessons daily and participates in the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra.

For South Hagerstown High School senior Craig Hammond, it was something he'd been dreaming of since freshman year - the chance to be on the drum line of a Drum Corps International drum corps. Earning a spot on Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps' drum line this past year made that dream come true. "When I was told I made the line, I was speechless. My goal was to march DCI," said Craig, who lives in the St. James area. Jersey Surf was one of several DCI drum corps for which Craig, 17, considered auditioning.

WILLIAMSPORT -Springfield Middle School, 330 Sunset Ave., will celebrate its 30th anniversary with of events and activities for the community from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 3. A pancake breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. The Springfield jazz band, orchestra and chamber choir will perform. A book fair will be held and student government representatives will lead tours of the building. School building replicas will be sold. There will be ceremonies to honor the River Rat and the Green Team.
