A lot of schools have art shows, but James Buchanan High School might just be the only one to offer two tractors doing the tango. Tractors circled and shimmied behind the school during the fourth annual Arts in Action. Held Thursday evening, the event featured fine arts, music, dance, robotics, a flight simulator, poetry, a farm display and yes, tractor dancing. “We have something for everything,” said Anita Shively, an art teacher who organized the event. Shively spent more than two decades teaching elementary art before transferring to the high school.

James Buchanan High School student Wesley Sword recently took third place at a safe driving competition for young drivers from Cumberland and Franklin counties. South Central PA Highway Safety hosted the event in which students were judged through a written test, a perceptual slide test and a hands-on driving test. Sword, a junior, will serve as an alternate candidate for a statewide competition.

Whitetail Resort recently chose nine candidates to receive the 11th annual Whitetail Resort Employee Scholarship promoting higher education. Eight candidates received scholarships of $500 each, and one candidate received the third annual Whitetail Resort-Oscar Weller Memorial Employee Scholarship in the amount of $1,000, according to a news release. Students were eligible if they were employees in good standing for the 2012-13 season at Whitetail Resort.  Scholarships are awarded based on academic excellence and Whitetail's company values.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Daniel A. Snyder of Hagerstown was named to the dean's list for the fall semester at Shepherd University. He is working toward a Bachelor of Arts in communications, new media. He graduated from St. Maria Goretti High School in 2012. ANNVILLE, Pa. - Lauren C. O'Boyle, a sophomore health science major at Lebanon Valley College, is spending the spring semester in Italy as part of the college's study abroad program. O'Boyle is a graduate of Saint John's Catholic Prep in Frederick, Md. ANNVILLE, Pa . -   Local students were honored at Lebanon Valley College's annual spring awards and recognition ceremony.

Dave Reeder, a longtime Washington County Public Schools administrator, is a finalist for the superintendent post for the Camp Hill, Pa., school system, Camp Hill board member Barbara LaBine said Monday. Camp Hill’s superintendent is retiring June 30 and the school board is expected to make a decision about the next superintendent in the next couple of weeks, LaBine said. Reeder, of Greencastle, Pa., is director of secondary education for Washington County Public Schools. A 1975 graduate of James Buchanan High School in Franklin County, Pa., Reeder said he has worked for Washington County schools for 32 years.

The Greencastle-Antrim Education Foundation selected Greg Boyer as the 2012 recipient of the Ambassador Scholarship.  The goal of the program is to build future leaders who are committed to service and their community. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded to a graduating senior of Greencastle-Antrim School District to support emerging leaders in the community's youth.  Greg is an Eagle Scout of America and has active membership in nine organizations that serve the school, community and his church.   The foundation also selected Patricia Kotrady and Sarah Gipe to receive Ambassador Book Awards of $500.

Joy Juanita Ballard, 60, a resident of Winchester, Kan., died June 1, 2013, in Hutchinson, Kan. She was born Nov. 24, 1952, in Gettysburg, Pa., and was the daughter of Chester Linden Ballard and Mildred Marie Naugle Ballard. She was a graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, Pa., and had an elementary education degree from Sterling College. She was a Vietnam War veteran with the U. S. Navy. She was a member of Topeka Bible Church and Hutchinson Lions Club.

John E. Cordell, 63, of Mercersburg, Pa., died at 3:40 a.m. Monday, Nov. 14, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md. Born Dec. 10, 1947, in Chambersburg, Pa., he was a son of the late Ned R. and Sarah R. Amsley Cordell. A 1967 graduate of James Buchanan High School, John was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was employed by Martin's Foods from 1971 until 2004. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, and VFW Post 6241, both of Mercersburg.

Richard Alloway II, R-Franklin/Adams/York, said Monday he plans to introduce legislation soon to support agriculture education by allowing students to participate in Drive Your Tractor to School Day. Current law only allows a tractor or truck with a farm vehicle registration plate to be used exclusively on a farm, on farms owned or operated by the registrant of the vehicle, or on highways between farms, according to a news release....

For about the first two years that the Class of 2013 attended James Buchanan High School, the school was undergoing a major remodeling project, not unlike the students themselves as they evolved from freshman to seniors, Principal Rodney N. Benedick told the 167 graduates. “I understand you are anxious to go out and take on the world,” Benedick told the soon-to-be graduates. He asked that they not forget James Buchanan High School and check back once in a while so their alma mater can see how they are doing.

Byron George Ashburn, 87, of Chambersburg, Pa., passed away Wednesday, May 1, 2013, at Quincy Village. Born March 4, 1926, in Altoona, Pa., he was the son of the late Samuel George and Mildred Elizabeth Brubaker Ashburn. A 1944 graduate of Altoona High School, Mr. Ashburn went on to serve honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1944 to 1946. After his military commitment, Mr. Ashburn attended the former Shippensburg State Teachers College, where he played on the football team and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor's degree in education.

Longtime rivals James Buchanan High School and Greencastle-Antrim High School teamed up Saturday to raise money for both schools at the first Flannery's Pub Run Half Marathon. The 13.1-mile run from Flannery's Tavern at 5 N. Main St. in Mercersburg, Pa., to the John Allison Public House at 104 E. Baltimore St. in Greencastle benefited Greencastle's G-A MAAX (Greencastle-Antrim Maximizing Arts and Athletic X-cellence) and James Buchanan's Fix JB Sports. The race was sponsored by Sunnyway Foods in Greencastle.

Richard Eugene "Dick" Gouker, 62, of Mercersburg, Pa., departed this life Wednesday, March 6, 2013, surrounded by his loved ones. Born May 31, 1950, he was the son of the late Joseph Eugene Gouker and the late Elizabeth Robinson Gouker Hurley.  He attended James Buchanan High School. Dick married Linda Diana Mellott in 1966, and lost the love of his life in June 2007. Dick served in the U.S. Air Force from 1973 to 1993. He was stationed in Spain, Saudi Arabia, Texas, the Philippines and Alamogordo, N.M. He served in Operation Desert Storm and retired with the rank of staff sergeant.
