HAGERSTOWN Twelve-year-old April Maloff of Hagerstown took one small bite of her friend's cherry Italian ice. She swished the bright red slush in her mouth once and spit it out on the pavement. "I don't like cherry," April said. She was one of hundreds who took advantage of the Rita's Italian ice giveaway Monday in Hagerstown - the first day of spring. It was the 13th annual giveaway for the national Italian ice chain. Everyone visiting the stores, including locations in Pennsylvania, Frederick, Md., and Hagerstown received a free, 10-ounce Italian ice. April and other Girls Inc. members went to the giveaway with two staff members.

School lunch menus Washington County | Oct. 16 to 20 Elementary Monday - chicken nuggets, whipped potatoes with gravy, mixed fruit cocktail, sweet peas and milk. Tuesday - cheeseburger on bun with lettuce and tomato, crunchy potato rounds, pineapple tidbits, no-bake cookie and milk. Wednesday - twin tacos, crunchy or soft, with lettuce, tomato, salsa and cheese, seasoned corn, sliced peaches and milk. Thursday - pizza, steamed green beans, applesauce, Italian ice and milk.

Thursday - rib-i-cue sub, potato rounds, fruit crisp, orange juice bar and milk. Friday - fish sandwich, parsley buttered potatoes, green beans, orange smiles and milk.

Sept. 21 - Sept. 27 The Washington County Commission on Aging offers noon lunches to anyone 60 years and older at seven locations - Hancock, Smithsburg, Keedysville, Williamsport and three in Hagerstown. A two-day reservation notice is required and a donation is asked per meal. For information, call 301-790-0275. Weekly menu Wednesday - Italian ice, lasagna with meat sauce, tossed salad with chickpeas, Texas toast, pears and milk. Thursday - Open-faced turkey sandwich, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, whole-grain bread, banana and milk.

Thompson Gas BOONSBORO - Thompson Gas, which has its headquarters in Boonsboro, recently finalized the purchase of Nichol's Appliance Center of Purcellville, Va. Nichol's Appliance Center has served Loudoun County, Va., and the surrounding region for more than 40 years.

The sun's rays reflected off the concrete as the afternoon's temperatures crept toward 99 degrees. "This has been unreal," said Jones, an employee at the convenience store. Jones said he has watched trees at his house starting to wither from the heat and at work Monday, he tried to dodge the sun as much as he could.
