If you strive to be a good journalist, you try to see things from the point of view of the people you're interviewing. And so, yes, I understand that in many cases, government officials would rather not tell citizens - and the press - everything that they're doing. For example, if you're a county official who wants to dismiss a department head, but you don't have a really good reason to do so, you might not want to the public to know how much you're paying him or her to just go away quietly.

A Hagerstown city supervisor has been using his office computer and city e-mail address to bid on or buy antiques through a popular Internet auction site over the past 14 months, sometimes during work hours. Purchasing Department Director G. David White confirmed Thursday that he has been accessing the "eBay" site and other Internet sites before, during and after work hours. City Administrator Bruce Zimmerman said based on what White told him, White has not violated the city's policy on Internet use at work.

ANNAPOLIS - Purposely surfing the Internet on someone else's wireless connection, without permission, would be a crime under a bill Del. LeRoy E. Myers Jr. presented Tuesday. Myers, R-Washington/Allegany, said his bill is meant to clarify intentional theft vs. accidental use. He told the House Judiciary Committee that one of his neighbors, after buying a new laptop computer, got onto the Internet, thinking it was through a cable TV hookup. Actually, the connection was through Myers' home wireless Internet system.

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - Shepherd University has partnered with Frontier Communications to provide wireless Internet access to several additional buildings on Shepherd's campus. The new Frontier network will be available in McMurran Hall, Reynolds Hall, Knutti Hall, White Hall, Robert C. Byrd Science and Technology Center, Snyder Hall and Frank Center Theater, the school announced this week. The original Shepherd wireless network is available in the Student Center, Scarborough Library, Ikenberry Hall, Erma Ora Byrd Hall, Wellness Center, Butcher Center, Dining Hall and Center for Contemporary Arts, according to the release.
