One person was killed and two were seriously injured in the head-on collision of a BMW and a Ford pick-up truck Wednesday night in the 20200 block of Mt. Aetna Road near the entrance to Black Rock Golf Course. Shortly after the 8:31 p.m. accident, a Maryland State Police medevac helicopter arrived to transport the occupant of the car to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, said Capt. Doug Mullendore of the Washington County Sheriff's Department. The identity and condition of that person were unavailable Wednesday night.

A federal judge Friday sentenced a Dominican Republic citizen to 3 1/2 years in prison for twice fraudulently trying to obtain a U.S. passport through the Hagerstown Post Office, the Maryland U.S. Attorney's Office said. U.S. District Judge Catherine C. Blake sentenced Leavitt Rodriguez, also known as Jose Luis Rosario Colon, 29, on two counts each of passport fraud and aggravated identity the, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Rod J. Rosenstein. Rodriguez will also spend three years of supervision after getting out of prison, the release said.

NEERSVILLE, Va. - A Harpers Ferry, W.Va.-area man was killed Saturday morning when his vehicle struck a tree off Harpers Ferry Road in Loudoun County, Va., according to a Loudoun County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman. The accident happened around 4 a.m. near Loudoun Heights Lane, said spokeswoman Judi Lukens Torian. Driver Jeffrey B. Smith, 24, was southbound in the 1994 Ford Explorer when it went off the road and hit the tree, Torian said. A passerby discovered the accident and reported it to authorities, she said.

A Washington, D.C. man who used another man's checks and identity to go shopping at Prime Outlets will serve three years in prison, according to Washington County District Court records. Frederick Rondell Bland of 701 P Street, NW pleaded guilty to theft of less than $500 and was sentenced March 14 to six years in prison, court records said. Washington County Circuit Judge R. Noel Spence suspended three years of the sentence, court records said. As a result of the plea, charges of forgery, cashing a forged check and personal identity theft; four counts of misdemeanor theft; and one count of felony theft were dropped, a District Court clerk said.

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Opinions differed Thursday over how much of a security threat was posed to county residents when Social Security numbers were included in a new Internet-based county records search program that was launched last week. Jefferson County Clerk Jennifer Maghan, whose office oversees records like property deeds, judgments and tax liens, said she wanted to put the records online to help people do record searches more efficiently. But the new online program, which started Oct. 24, was taken down Wednesday after Maghan realized people's Social Security numbers were in some of the records.

Clemens reveals identity of 'Mystery Man' as Ringgold During a talk given to the Keedysville Historical Society Monday, Feb. 18, Professor and historian Tom Clemens of Keedysville revealed the identity of Washington County's forgotten military hero as Samuel Ringgold. Ringgold, who was born in 1800 at the family estate, Fountain Rock (now the site of Saint James School), was appointed to the Military Academy at West Point at the age of 14. He graduated fifth in his class of 23 and is considered the "Father of Flying Artillery" for his innovations in artillery tactics and equipment.

An Ellicott City, Md., man died Sunday at a Virginia hospital after participating in the Tough Mudder endurance series in Berkeley County on Saturday, police said. Avishek Sengupta, 28, was pronounced dead at Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., Berkeley County Sheriff's Deputy Sgt. Ted Snyder said Monday. Sengupta's death was ruled accidental by the Virginia medical examiner's office in Manassas, Va., which said Monday afternoon that drowning was the cause of death. Sengupta had to be removed from a fairly deep pool at the “Walk the Plank” aquatic obstacle where it appears he was submerged for too long, according to Snyder.

Boonsboro had just pounded out 16 hits against South Hagerstown on the way to an 11-7 victory on Thursday at South. But coach Ben Leonard and his staff weren't doing any cartwheels. "Our performance today didn't feel like a win," he said. "Right now, we need some playmakers. No defense. Nobody is listening on how to hit. " Cody Snavely had four hits and six RBIs to lead the attack and Seth Poffenberger and Phil Hershberger each had three hits, but there were other areas of play that irked Leonard, especially when the Warriors seemed to have relaxed late in the game and made several errors.
