A Chambersburg fundraiser for the community's less fortunate came back for seconds Sunday. Chambersburg Area Senior High School's art department hosted its second annual “Soup for Soul” fundraiser and earmarked this year's revenue for the Boys & Girls Club of Chambersburg and Reins of Rhythm. About 85 people bought tickets to fill a handcrafted bowl of their choosing with one of six varieties of soup. Donated Goose Bros. ice cream and Starbucks beverages also were served at the event at Central Presbyterian Church.

John Herbst remembers the early Ringgold Ruritan Strawberry Festivals more than 50 years ago. A charter member of the club, Herbst, 89, and his wife Betty, 90, used to take their children with them to the old schoolhouse to make homemade strawberry ice cream. Right up through last year, Herbst dipped ice cream at the fundraiser. This year, he decided to pass on the scoop. “I finished it. My son does it now,” he said. The elder Herbsts owned and operated Smithsburg's Misty Meadow Farms.

SMITHSBURG - An ice cream social will be held Wednesday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. at the Smithsburg Historical Society Museum, 20 E. Water St. The event, which is free, is to be hosted in a new gazebo recently erected behind the museum property. All are welcome.

When the burgers and frankfurters are done, keep the grill going for dessert. The heat helps caramelize the sugars in fruit, as in this recipe for grilled strawberries and bananas. Pineapple, plums, peaches and mango are other great options for grilled fruit. Alternatively, skip the ice cream and serve these berries and bananas over pound or angel food cake dusted with powdered sugar. GRILLED STRAWBERRIES AND BANANAS WITH ICE CREAM Start to finish: 15 minutes Servings: 4 2 tablespoons lime juice 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon canola oil Pinch salt Pinch cinnamon 1 pint strawberries, hulled and halved 1 banana, sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch rounds 1 pint vanilla ice cream Whipped cream, to serve Heat a grill to medium.

Ranee Baker provided the program for TOPS Chapter 308 on Aug. 10. She talked about ice cream addiction and the other foods that you can be eaten instead. TOPS' best loser for Aug. 10 was Barbara Reeder at 2 1/2 pounds. TOPS best loser for Aug. 17 was Marie Stover at 2 3/4 pounds. KOPS was Bonnie Barnhart at 1/2 pound. The program was a roundtable discussion, during which chapter members learn a lot about each other. TOPS weigh-ins are Fridays at 4:45 p.m. before the 5:45 p.m. meeting at First Christian Church, 1345 Potomac Ave., Hagerstown.
