If driving the much improved 2004 Kia Spectra tells us one thing, it's that an inexpensive car isn't necessarily a "cheap" car. Nearly every entry-level company has, at one time or another, built its share of "cheap" cars: tiny body, tiny steel wheels, tiny engine, tiny features list, tiny comfort level, all balanced with a tiny sticker price. Sure, Kia has built cheap cars. Its parent, Hyundai, built cheap cars, once, too. But we watched that company progress and build "inexpensive" high-quality cars with plenty of content.

Replacing last year's XG350 as the Hyundai's flagship model, the Azera represents a clean stab at creating a premium-class automobile minus the accompanying premium sticker price. The Azera is but one of more than a half-dozen new Hyundai models either recently introduced or already in the pipeline. Included in this group is the '06 Sonata as well as a completely redesigned entry-level Accent sedan that arrives this fall at the same time as the Azera. The freshman-effort XG350 and the XG300 before it certainly delivered all the goodies one might expect in a premium-oriented car, but both lacked the required sense of upper-crust style and panache.

Now each has two models: Hyundai has the Santa Fe and Tucson; and Kia has its charming Sorento and the all-new Tucson-derived Sportage. If Detroit can practise the ancient art of badge engineering, hey, then so can these two Korean makes.
