pepperb@herald-mail.com Area walkers pounded the pavement Sunday, strolling along highways and city streets, in an effort to help feed the hungry. Small groups were scattered walking along Shepherdstown Pike Sunday as part of the South County CROP Walk. Walkers said they were trying to raise awareness about world hunger by walking the five miles between Sharpsburg Pharmacy and Keedysville's Taylor Park. Three other communities in Washington County hosted similar CROP Walks Sunday: Hagerstown, Clear Spring and Hancock.

Satisfying a hunger for a career change By KATE COLEMAN katec@herald-mail.com Susan Maye knew she wanted to study art after she graduated from North Hagerstown High School in 1975. She didn't know that would lead to working on major motion pictures. Maye, 43, of Richmond, Va., recently completed work on "Hearts in Atlantis," a film starring Anthony Hopkins, expected to be released this year. Before that she worked on another Hopkins film - "Hannibal," the sequel to "Silence of the Lambs," Hopkins' 1991 Academy-Award winning thriller.

Wanna skate? The CROP Walk for Hunger will sponsor a skate-a-thon, Saturday, Sept. 30, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at Starland Roller Rink. For information and registration forms, call Bob Hyssong at 301-491-0785. There will be a Christian skate night at Family Skating Center, 17333 Virginia Ave. in Hagerstown, Monday, Oct. 2, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. Admission is $2 plus skate rental. Regular skates are $1, speed or in-line skates are $2.50. There will be top 40, Christian and praise music, games, contests and prizes.

Not just craving a chocolate-chip cookie. continued Hungry - not enough food to eat, not enough money to afford enough food. Most Americans - 90 percent - have enough to eat. In the past few years, the number of U.S. households that experienced hunger declined by 24 percent, according to a United States Department of Agriculture report.

North Hagerstown High School sophomore Danielle Danley, believes one person can make a difference. [cont. from front page ] Danley of Maugansville, became aware of the plight of starving children throughout the world after reading a magazine article. She decided to do something about it. A member of Salem Reformed Church, Hagerstown, the 16-year-old organized a 30-hour hunger awareness fund-raiser which garnered about $3,000 for World Vision, a nonprofit, Christian famine-relief organization.

Judge foils convict's hunger strike By BRENDAN KIRBY Staff Writer A prisoner who has waged a hunger strike for the last four years will continue to be medically force-fed, a judge ruled Monday. Washington County Circuit Judge Frederick C. Wright III granted a preliminary injunction in a case that could set a precedent in Maryland. The ruling allows state prison officials to resume tube-feeding Warren R. Stevenson. Wright earlier had granted a 10-day temporary restraining order, but that expired on Friday.

RCI goes to court to halt inmate's hunger strike By BRENDAN KIRBY Staff Writer State prison officials have obtained a temporary court order allowing them to force-feed a Roxbury Correctional Institution inmate who has been on a hunger strike to protest his prison sentence. Washington County Circuit Court Judge Frederick C. Wright III on Monday issued a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction on Monday, according to court records. The order, which expires midnight Dec. 23, allows officials to force Warren R. Stevenson to eat. Maxine Eldridge, a spokeswoman for the Division of Correction, said Stevenson has cooperated with the order.

By BRENDAN KIRBY Staff Writer A mile into Sunday's CROP Walk, Selma Lumm was still going strong. Lumm, 83, said she was keeping a promise she made to herself after missing last year's walk, which benefits the hungry. "I thought about it last year and didn't after saying I would. I couldn't let another year go by," she said. Would Lumm finish? "How far do I have to go?" she asked. When told the walk was about six miles, she said: "I doubt it. Now if it had been a couple years ago . " But to organizers of the annual event, finishing is not necessarily the point.

Here are some tips: 1. Try to allot 15 or 20 minutes a week to set up menus. Balance recipe choices with your schedule, planning to serve more complicated dishes when your calender is free of appointments and more simple meals when it's full.
