The event was one of about six major fundraisers the humane society holds each year, said Heather Guessford, the board of directors' fundraising chair and the event coordinator. “We're so excited because it's the first time we've done anything downtown as a private party,” Guessford said. The event featured local blues-rock band Moondog Medicine Show, as well as a silent auction and a “Taste of Downtown,” which offered specially prepared dishes from area restaurants.

Field officers from the Humane Society of Washington County rescued three malnourished dogs from an area home this week, the organization said. The agency was made aware of the neglect by a telephone call from an anonymous source who reported three seemingly neglected dogs that were fighting, according to a news release from the humane society. Two of the dogs were deemed emaciated enough for the officers to approach the house, but the owners denied them entrance, leading the officers to work with the Washington County Sheriff's Office, county State's Attorney's Office and county District Court to obtain a warrant to rescue the animals, the release said.
