Hospice of Washington County Inc., has scheduled a winter volunteer training program from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, Friday, Jan. 18, and Wednesday, Jan. 23. Hospice is a Medicare certified, JCAHO accredited, licensed program of nursing, certified nursing aide, social work, chaplain and volunteer support services for patients and families who need end-of-life care. Britt Reed Law Offices was successful in its challenge to the community to raise $25,000 for Hospice of the Panhandle's Building the Dream campaign - so successful, in fact, that hospice was able to raise $66,160 through the match, and reach its 2012 year-end goal of $3.5 million. Terry Britt, of Britt Reed Law Offices, announced in late November that the firm would match, dollar for dollar, up to $25,000. In mid-November, Hospice's donors exceeded the challenge, and Britt Reed agreed to increase and match donors' contributions up to $30,000, according to a news release.

Donald Burr Kisner, 85, of Martinsburg, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012, under the care of hospice, at Countryside Assisted Living in Martinsburg. Born Sept. 22, 1927, in Martinsburg, he was the son of the late David and Mary Virginia Kisner. He retired from the West Virginia Department of Labor, was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a member of Equality Lodge 44 A.F. & A.M. He was a lifelong member of Calvary United Methodist Church. Donald loved his family, his church, his kind caregivers and playing tennis.

Dr. Ira Lourie was honored Nov. 9 by Hospice of Washington County for his fundraising efforts. Twenty-four individuals from not-for-profits in Western Maryland were honored during the Philanthropy Day Luncheon at Hollow Creek Golf Course in Middletown, Md. Lourie was honored for raising more than $30,000 to establish The Jennifer Fund at Hospice of Washington County. The fund, named after Lourie's daughter, was designed to support pediatric patients and their families.

Hospice of Washington County staff members and volunteers placed and lighted 1,500 luminarias along the pathways of City Park on Nov. 30. It marked the third year that Hospice and the city of Hagerstown have partnered for the City Park tree lighting event.  Hospice sells luminaria kits for a minimum donation of $5 each. For each donation, a name is read in honor of those living or in memory of those who have passed.  “This year, we read 450 names from the stage before the tree lighting festivities began,” said Cheryl Brown, development director for Hospice.

Emily P. Johnston Owens, 85, of Ranson, W.Va., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2012, at her home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. Friends will be received Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town, W.Va. The service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Henry Christie will officiate. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, Va.

Larry W. Osbourn, 69, of Shepherdstown, W.Va., died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at his home while under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle. A celebration of life will be at McMurran Farm, Shepherdstown, Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. Burial will be private. Arrangements are by Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home in Charles Town, W.Va.

Clara B. "Sis" Wise Dunn, 89, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Thursday, Dec. 6, 2012, while under the care of Hospice at Willow Tree Manor. The family will receive friends Friday from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at Brown Funeral Home, where a nursing memorial will be at 6:30 p.m. The service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Brian Persinger officiating. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.

Jewel Banks Hicks, age 92, of Williamsport, Md., and formerly of Maugansville, Md., passed away Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012, at Homewood of Williamsport under the loving care of the staff of Homewood and Hospice of Washington County. Born Wednesday, July 14, 1920, in Stanly County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late J. Homer Mauldin and the late Daisy (Barbee) Mauldin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Glen D. Hicks, in 1994. She was formerly employed with Dorby Dress Manufacturing.

The Honorable David O'Brien Martin, 68, of Hedgesville, W.Va., passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at his residence while under the care of Hospice and surrounded by his wife and family. Born April 26, 1944, in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., he was the son of the late Edson A. and Anne O'Brien Martin. He was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and proudly served in Vietnam. He proudly served six terms in the United States House of Representatives representing his constituents in Northern and Central New York.
