Amelia L. Chaney, 67, of Hagerstown, Md., died April 8, 2013, at her daughter's home in Texas under Hospice care. Born Jan. 1, 1946, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Christina M. Chaney. She retired from Washington County Public Schools on Jan. 1, 2012. She leaves to cherish her memory daughters, Diana C. Simon (Freddie) of Beaumont, Texas, and Lisa A. and Michael Wertman of Hagerstown; three sisters, Linda Brill of Smithsburg, Md., Carol and Lewis Lucas of Boonsboro, Md., and Mary and Vernon Richmond of West Virginia; three brothers, Charles Chaney of Hagerstown, Frank and Barb Chaney of Georgia, and Michael and Marion Chaney of Georgia; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; family friends; and a very special friend, Rose Wood.

Arnold "Buck" Hess, 80, of Martinsburg, W.Va., died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at his home while under hospice care. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at South Berkeley Chapel, Inwood, W.Va. The service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at Faith Tabernacle Assembly of God. Burial with military graveside honors will be in Gerrardstown (W.Va.) Presbyterian Cemetery.

Zion Baptist Church on Bethel Street in Hagerstown will host Hospice of Washington County as it presents Hospice Care in Hagerstown on Saturday, April 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program will feature welcoming remarks by Hospice CEO Eric Klimes and Pastor Ricky A. Smith Sr., presentations from Dr. Bernice Harper and Dr. Gwendolyn London and panel discussions featuring staff from Hospice. Breakfast and lunch will be served. Those interested in attending the event should call Hospice to reserve a seat.

Mary A. Putnam of Williamsport, Md., was received into the arms of her Savior on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2013. She was born in Baltimore on July 15, 1923. She lived in Pennsylvania, Virginia and Texas before returning to Maryland for the last 10 years of her life. She was a member of Van Lear Brethren in Christ Church. Mary was a lifelong Washington Redskins fan. She had a great love for animals, rainbows, poetry, painting, clowns and laughter. Most of all, she loved Our Lord. She was preceded in death by her parents, Catherine and Michael Babczak; husband, Gene Putnam; and granddaughter, Tracy Kent.

Family expresses thanks to Hospice, volunteers To the editor: When our mother, Cornelia Lindsay, was diagnosed with a terminal illness in August 2012, the family knew the next step had to be determined ahead of time. We knew Mom wanted to stay at her home, even though her four children had empty bedrooms. Mom lived alone. She was very independent and strong, but also a very private person. After she was released from the hospital, we visited with the adviser at Hospice of Washington County, who explained in detail the steps to begin receiving their help.

Virginia Kaye "Ginger" Shirley, 57, of Big Pool, Md., passed away Friday, Nov. 9, 2012, at her home under hospice care. Born Nov. 2, 1955, in St. Petersburg, Fla., she was the daughter of George Daniel and Joann Brewer Noble of Hagerstown, Md. She was a 1974 graduate of Williamsport High School. She was previously employed by Martin's Food Market in Hagerstown in the deli and bakery. She was of the Protestant faith. Ginger enjoyed camping with her grandchildren, gardening, fishing, cooking and spending time with her family.
