kauffman@herald-mail.com WILLIAMSPORT - Yes, he was pitching against Williamsport star Nick Adenhart. And yes, there were dozens of major league scouts present, but North Hagerstown ace T.J. Hose's motivation stemmed from a much more important source. "I'd like to dedicate this game to my grandmother," Hose said after orchestrating a masterful, complete game 2-1 victory over Adenhart and the Wildcats on a chilly, overcast Wednesday afternoon. "She passed away Saturday, the funeral was today, and I knew she was there with me the entire game.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It might seem like T.J. Hose is in the wrong place at the right time. Living and playing in South Bend, Ind. -- in the shadow of Notre Dame -- Hose's pitching efforts could get lost in an area steeped in football tradition. But the North Hagerstown graduate is no different than the Fighting Irish. Every time he takes the field, he wants to score a touchdown. Figuratively speaking, of course. Hose is a pitcher with many roles for the South Bend Silver Hawks, the Arizona Diamondbacks' Single-A affiliate in the Midwest League.

kauffman@herald-mail.com Century found out the hard way Monday: Give T.J. Hose a five-run first-inning cushion, and he's awfully tough to beat. Matt Murray's highlighted North Hagerstown's early offensive explosion with a two-run single before taking his usual spot behind the plate to catch another Hose gem as the Hubs ace twirled a two-hit shutout for a 7-0 victory over Century in the Class 2A West quarterfinals. "He doesn't need that many (runs)," Murray said.

A broken fire hydrant and an issue with a pumper truck's engine throttle were discovered during a Hagerstown Fire Department training exercise Sunday morning at the North Potomac Street Parking Deck, fire officials said. Other than those issues, the training went well, Battalion Chief Russ Grimm said. A fire hydrant on North Potomac Street, in front of The Gourmet Goat and Senior Notes, was struck by a vehicle at some point, Fire Marshal Doug DeHaven said. When pushed, the hydrant tipped, and if a hose were to be hooked up to it, the water would come out near the flange, or rim around the bottom, he said.
