katec@herald-mail.com What did four Shepherd College music majors do with their summer vacation? They did not work jobs in construction or pizza parlors. They did not bask on beaches and work on their tans. But they worked - incredibly hard - and learned about music, their abilities and their passions. They sharpened their skills and their focus. Frank Gorecki, Angela Weadon, Adam Hanlin and David Shipley went the distance for their music - and then some. Shepherd has just a few more than 100 music majors.

"John, in the minds of the Personnel Committee, has a tremendous grasp of where we want to go with LIDA," said Board Member John Redding, who headed up the selection process.

All right, when did Hagerstown decide it was going to turn into San Fermin, Spain? We had our own personal running of the bulls on Wednesday when four of these bovine banditos escaped from a livestock trailer on I-70 and led police on a wild beef chase. Something tells me that this isn't exactly what men and women have in mind when they sign up for the police academy to make our streets and communities a safer place. But when the escape occurred, the police were the ones who got the assignment.

By GUY FLETCHER Staff Writer Lamenting over the less-than-sparkling condition of his horns, Barry Tuckwell, perhaps the world's most famous French horn player, had a confession. "I've had a bad Brasso day," he said, prompting laughter from the audience at the Maryland Theatre. Officially, it was "Maestro Tuckwell Presents the Mysteries of the French Horn," but it could have been simply called Horn 101. For nearly an hour Friday afternoon, Tuckwell took his "students," more than 100 people who came for the free lunchtime program, through hundreds of years of horns and horn playing.
