Elizabeth "Beth" Anne (Lapole) Gardner, 30, of Hagerstown, Md., passed from this life on Monday, June 11, 2012, at her home. Born April 5, 1982, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of Deborah S. Thompson and her husband, Richard Gross, of Hagerstown, and Gary A. Lapole and his wife, Mae, of Boonsboro. Beth was an honor graduate in 2000 from Boonsboro High School, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Hood College in Frederick, Md. She was employed as the administrative assistant with Lapole Electric in Boonsboro.

FREDERICK, Md. - Amanda Hutzell, who has completed her junior year at Hood College, was recently inducted into the Chi Alpha Sigma national honor society. Chi Alpha Sigma honors junior and senior student-athletes who have achieved excellence in athletics and academics, saluting those who have maintained a 3.4 or higher grade-point average. Amanda graduated from North Hagerstown High School, where she was a member of the girls soccer team, winning the Washington County championship all four years she attended.

The Greencastle-Antrim (Pa.) Endowment presented $2,000 scholarships from the endowment to Greencastle-Antrim High School students Ethan Koons, Ammarah Spall and Gregory Boyer during the school's annual academic awards ceremony. Boyer plans to attend Liberty University to pursue a degree in medicine. Koons plans to attend Shenandoah University to pursue a degree in pharmacy. Spall plans to attend Hood College to pursue a degree in medicine. This was the first year Greencastle-Antrim Endowment offered the scholarship.

The Washington County Retired Educational Personnel Association recentlly awarded $1,000 Nellie and Lake Lytton Scholarships to six local students. Scholarship recipients were Christina Dunlop, Mount St. Mary's University; Kayla Grout, Towson University; Sally Johnston, Hood College; Heather Butts, Salisbury University; Samantha Metz, Frostburg State University; and Ralph Weaver, Shepherd University.

The Chambersburg Area Hospital Auxiliary recently held its spring luncheon at Chestnut Landing Menno Haven Northgate Common. Officers were installed, and scholarships were presented to the following area students who are working toward a medical career: Irene Barbour, a student at Shippensburg (Pa.) University. Barbour is a chemistry major and hopes to become a pharmacist. Gregory Boyer, a senior at Greencastle-Antrim (Pa.) High School. Boyer will attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., and hopes to become a family physician.

Hugo W. Cardenas, 86, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away at Providence Place, Chambersburg, Pa., in the presence of his family on Nov. 28, 2011. Born Aug. 11, 1925, in Arequipa, Peru, he settled in the United States in 1959. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Julia Fernandez Cardenas; four children and their spouses, Hugo and Caryl Cardenas, Juan and Julie Ann Cardenas, Steve and Laurie Cardenas, and Julie and Edward Bossart, along with 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
