William D. Byron Post 1936 Veterans of Foreign Wars awarded its 2008 scholarships in the amount of $500 to Atlee T. Baker and Devin Gaither. Baker, a 2007 graduate of Smithsburg High School, is attending McDaniel College in Westminster, Md., with a double major in physics and biology. He is the son of Mark and Sandie Baker of Hagerstown. Gaither, a student at Hood College in Frederick Md., is majoring in art and English.

Britta Troxell, a 2008 graduate of Williamsport High School, was awarded a $1,000 Maryland Masonic Charities Scholarship. Troxell is attending Hagerstown Community College. Stephanie Toone, a 2008 graduate of Williamsport High School, and Allison Moore, a 2008 graduate of Clear Spring High School, were each presented $500 scholarships by the Medairy Masonic Temple Association, Lodge 140. Toone is attending Hood College and Moore is attending Frostburg State University.

Hood College men's basketball coach Tom Dickman was the featured speaker at the Oct. 2 meeting of the Fredericktowne Rotary Club. Dickman spoke about his coaching career and the upcoming season. The Greencastle-Antrim (Pa.) Endowment presented $2,000 scholarships from the endowment to Greencastle-Antrim High School students Ethan Koons, Ammarah Spall and Gregory Boyer during the school's annual academic awards ceremony. Boyer plans to attend Liberty University to pursue a degree in medicine. Koons plans to attend Shenandoah University to pursue a degree in pharmacy. Spall plans to attend Hood College to pursue a degree in medicine. This was the first year Greencastle-Antrim Endowment offered the scholarship.

BOWLING Perfect games Casey Kindle rolled a 300 game recently at Southside Bowl in Hagerstown. The 15-year-old tenpin bowler, competing in the Saturday Night Mixed League, followed with games of 201 and 180 for a 681 set. "I started to get a little nervous in the seventh frame," said Kindle, an 11th-grader at Williamsport High School said. "I've had a 290 game before, but this is my first 300. " The right-handed bowler competes in three different leagues, all at Southside Bowl.

GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. - Gwynedd-Mercy College has named Robert N. Funk of Frederick, Md., as interim vice president for academic affairs. He has held positions in the higher-education field for nearly 50 years. Most recently, Funk served as provost and dean of the faculty at Hood College in Frederick. He previously served in numerous administrative positions, including president of Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, a position he held for nine years, and president ad interim of Hood College, Villa Julie College in Maryland, and St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas.

Buchanan, of Frederick, has more than 25 years of insurance experience. She previously worked for an insurance agency in Frederick. WOMEN'S BASKETBALL COLUMBIA, Md. - Dee Brown had 20 points, five rebounds and two steals to lead Hagerstown Community College past defending Maryland JuCo Conference champion Howard, 62-58, on Tuesday. Erika McDavid and Jackie Hamilton each had 10 rebounds for the Hawks (5-2, 2-1) who had 53 rebounds. Veronica Johnson added 12 points and five assists. Shenandoah 67, Hood 58 FREDERICK, Md. - Hood College saw a four-point halftime lead evaporate into a loss against Shenandoah University in the Blazers' home opener.
