Phi Theta Kappa, the national honor society at Hagerstown Community College, recently inducted 59 new members. To be eligible for the honor, students must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and must have completed 12 credit hours of college-level work at HCC as a full-time student, or 15 credit hours of college-level work at HCC as a part-time student. Katie Barnhart, of Greencastle, Pa., has been honored for outstanding academic achievements at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pa., during her freshman year. The Director's Circle acknowledges freshmen achieving a 3.50 GPA or better. The Director's Circle is in its 18th year recognizing freshmen and Katie was recognized at the Director's Circle Celebration reception held at Duquesne University. Katie was inducted into Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, member of the Association of College Honor Societies, at Duquesne University.

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - Washington County residents Brittany Higgins and Jessica Powers were among 30 Bridgewater College seniors who have been selected for inclusion in the 2008 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Brittany, a 2004 Williamsport High School graduate, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Higgins of Williamsport. Brittany, who is majoring in communication studies, is a member of Lambda Pi Eta, a national communications honor society.

St. Maria Goretti High School in Hagerstown held a ceremony honoring newly inducted members of the Monsignor Leary Chapter of the National Honor Society on Thursday, March 13. Nearly 35 percent of the junior class met the requirements for induction. More than 45 percent of the senior class are members of the National Honor Society, as four seniors were newly inducted on March 13, joining 20 of their classmates who are second-year members. Nominations to the National Honor Society are based on scholastic eligibility, met by maintaining a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.75, but actual membership is awarded only to those students who meet or exceed all of the established criteria.
