Honor Guard

An honor guard from Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 is reflected in the mirrored window of a new addition to the Chambersburg YMCA during a dedication Sunday in Chambersburg, Pa. The expansion and renovation of the building celebrated Sunday cost $1.5 million.

The City of Hagerstown is holding a Flag Day ceremony on Sunday at 2 p.m. in the southwest corner of Public Square near the Peoples building, according to Karen Giffin, city spokeswoman. Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II and Miss Maryland are expected to attend the ceremony. Also on hand will be members of the Municipal Band and the Hagerstown City Police Department's honor guard.

Carl L. Gudgeon, 78, of Chambersburg, Pa., died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at Chambersburg Hospital. A graveside service will be Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Browns Mill Cemetery, Kauffman's Station, Antrim Township, Pa., with Pastor Alan Smith officiating. Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard. Arrangements are by Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Chambersburg.

Donald R. Crawford, 89, of 503 B Marshview Drive, Quincy, Pa., died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at his home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa. The service will be private and at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Harbaugh Church Cemetery near Rouzerville, Pa., with military graveside honors conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg, Pa.

On Sept. 11, Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown held its 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony with speeches, prayers, a moment of silence and the playing of taps for the victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. The Vietnam Veterans Last Man's Club provided the honor guard. The ceremony was held before the opening of Post 211's annual membership picnic.

Jon C. Minnich, 82, a resident of ManorCare Health Services, Chambersburg, Pa., and formerly of 13125 Ashton Drive and East Seventh Street, both of Waynesboro, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 2, 2012, at the nursing home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service Wednesday at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. The service will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, where military graveside honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg.

Gerald Eugene Sheffler, 84, of Hughesville, Md., and formerly of Greencastle, Pa., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2012. The family will receive friends at Harold M. Zimmerman And Son Funeral Home, Greencastle, Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The Greencastle V.F.W. will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial with military honors provided by Chambersburg V.F.W. Post 1599 Honor Guard will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery Greencastle.

Robert B. Britsch, 84, a resident of The Village of Laurel Run in Fayetteville, Pa., died Monday, June 21, 2010, at the nursing home. The family will receive friends Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa. Services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 of Chambersburg.

Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Roland E. Ost Jr., 81, of 3885 Alfalfa Lane in Fayetteville, Pa., died Tuesday, March 12, 2013, in Washington Township, Pa. The family will receive friends Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro, Pa. The service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro, where full military honors will be conducted by the honor guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Chambersburg, Pa.

Harold “Hendy” Sharpe Hendershott, 78, died Tuesday, April 2, 2013 at his home in Charlotte, N.C. The family will receive friends at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Geencastle, Pa., one hour before the service Saturday. The service will be Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the church. Burial with military honors provided by Chambersburg V.F.W. Post 1599 Honor Guard will be in Parklawns Memorial Gardens of Chambersburg, Pa. Arrangements are by Harold M.
