BIG POOL, Md. - Nearly two dozen muzzleloading enthusiasts braved blustery fall winds and a fickle sun Saturday on the first day of a weekend shoot, all to practice their hobby at Fort Frederick State Park. It's not an avocation for everyone. It takes a good eye, a steady hand and patience ... above all, patience. "I enjoy muzzleloading all year long," said Grayson Babington of Clear Spring. And his love of the hobby has been part of his life for 30 years. Saturday, Babington was shooting with friends, George Fisher of Clear Spring, and Les Boyd of Frederick, Md. After one particular round, Babington produced his paper turkey target to park officials with several bull's-eyes to the head.

HAGERSTOWN - Jack Stanton arrived in festive attire with a guitar strapped around his shoulder. But, he said he couldn't sing Christmas songs because he didn't have any bells. As a compromise, he asked the audience to jangle their keys as he sang "Jingle Bells. " Almost immediately, those in the crowd without keys began clapping and singing along. That began more than an hour of music, clown tricks and magic Wednesday for several hundred developmentally disabled children and seniors at the Potomac Center's activities building next to Marshall Street School.

Woodcarving is man's social, creative outlet By KERRY LYNN FRALEY Staff Writer FUNKSTOWN - It's time-consuming and expensive. Still, Mike Kenyon said he has never regretted accepting mentor Ray Reedy's offer to teach him woodcarving three years ago. The hobby has proven an enjoyable creative outlet and a handy ice-breaker, said Kenyon, 38, a corrections officer at Roxbury Correctional Institution. "A lot of people like looking, asking questions. It's a good way to meet girls," said the Funkstown native, who does a lot of his carving and painting at his friend Yan Gao's restaurant, Chan's Wok, just outside his hometown on Alternate U.S. 40. Sometimes, he said, he'll go to Hagerstown City Park and carve just to meet people.

Model horse collectors gather at Wilson College for show CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - As a horse show, this one was cleaner, quieter and absent the familiar odor normally associated with the big domestic animals. Most of the horses on display by the hundreds Saturday at a model horse show at Wilson College were made of plastic and a few were made of china, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of their owners which seemed no less intense than if their horses were made of flesh, hair and bone.

Lord knows I've had some strange hobbies over the years. First, it was He-Man. I adored He-Man. I had He-Man everything - the lunchbox, the thermos, the toy figures, you name it. Hey, I was 5 back then. Give me a mulligan. Which fits, because golf is another hobby of mine which perplexes me to this day. It's the language of golf that hooked me. In no other hobby have people come up with so many descriptive words for negative happenings: The chili dip (taking a divot about a foot deep and leaving your approach shot way short, and one time in my case, behind you)

anthonyb@herald-mail.com BOONSBORO - Norm Madison, vice president of Blue Ridge Riding Club, has wanted to raise money for a good cause for some time. He has seen other organizations succeed in their attempts, and on July 24, he will have his opportunity. Madison will hold the Ride for Kids Fun Show to raise money for Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Madison said it made more sense to donate to Children's than, for example, St. Jude's Children's Hospital, because of its location.

By LAURA ERNDE Staff Writer Robert C. Mauk was holding a cannon fuse during a Battle of Gettysburg re-enactment last year when something went terribly wrong. "I don't really know to this day why the gun went off, but it happened," said Mauk, 45, who was hospitalized for eight days and nearly lost his left hand in the accident. That was Mauk's first Civil War re-enactment, but not his last. The Hagerstown man doesn't let danger hold him back from a hobby he loves.
