One of the most important stories in wildlife management is the growing outbreak of Chronic Wasting Disease in wildlife herds around the country. The disease has been identified in wild deer and elk herds in Canada, Colorado, Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin. It has also been confirmed in captive deer or sometimes elk in Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, Oklahoma and Minnesota. As deer season approaches, many hunters are wondering if CWD is present in the deer herds of our area and if they should exercise special precautions in handling or consuming deer taken during the upcoming season.

Heading into the District 3 playoffs, the Greencastle-Antrim boys basketball team was looking to add a win to its impressive résumé in the final game of the regular season. Unfortunately, the Blue Devils had a poor defensive effort in the first half and were unable to capitalize on strong second halves from Joel Zola and Zach Faulkner in a 64-52 loss to Carlisle on Wednesday night. “I expect that from them (Zola and Faulkner) every night,” Greencastle head coach Gary Martin said.

martinsburg@herald-mail.com SHARPSBURG - The bright yellow tags hanging from her ears might make her look a little funny, but don't let them denigrate deer No. 1's intelligence. The first of about 80 bucks, does and fawns captured and tagged last winter by National Park Service employees at Antietam National Battlefield, deer No. 1 has provided officials with a lot of data about the traveling habits of local deer. Deer No. 1 was tagged while on the middle of the battlefield, but was later spotted west of Boonsboro - 6 1/2 to 7 miles away.

I can't deal with this. Not today. Not ever. A liberal version of the Tea Party? Please, just kill me now. If anything has choo-choo wreck written all over it, wait until you get a load of "One Nation," a coalition formed to "counter the tea party narrative" and jumpstart a progressive movement that's been down in the dumps since, oh I don't know, maybe the days of the child-labor reformers. Really, you think the Tea Party is disorganized? Wait until the liberals get behind the wheel of that pickup.

Kelly Herd's 2-year-old daughter, Lila, doesn't like getting into her car seat. She “makes a stink” about it, according to her mother, who was hopeful the safety message at Kids Alive Fest 2012 Saturday would make a positive impact. Herd, of Hagerstown, was among hundreds of parents who took their children to the 21st annual open house at Children's Village of Washington County Inc., according to executive director Rochelle Morrell. Crowds gathered for K-9, automobile extrication and helicopter landing demonstrations at the Mount Aetna Road facility.

"We Are Marshall" is a really good movie. It is based on a real story. It starts at a school named Marshall University in Huntington, W.Va., in 2006. The narrator tells that time stands still at one specific hour on a specific day each year to remember a tragedy that changed Huntington. Then, it goes back to November 1970 to a football game that Marshall's team, the Thundering Herd, lost. That night, on the plane ride back to Huntington, the plane carrying the team and coaches crashed, killing everyone.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources has released the harvest totals for the recently completed two-week firearms season. Despite a relatively slow start on opening weekend in some counties, the statewide kill for the two-week season was nearly identical to past seasons. The unofficial, two-week total was 44,805, compared to 44,313 last year. That is about as consistent as it gets. The final number will go up slightly as Maryland does offer some hunting into January of the new year that will be added.
