Pulse looks a little different today thanks to the efforts of the Pulse team and Herald-Mail graphic designer Chad Trovinger. It's been a little more than a year since the launch of Pulse, and we wanted to shake things up with a redesign, which we'll do every year or so with help from local teens. What do you think about the new look? If you have a comment or suggestion, send it to Assistant Lifestyle Editor Chris Copley at chrisc@herald-mail.com .

They approached Publisher John League with an idea to start 2000 on a high note, by marking Jan. 1 with the announcement of The Herald-mail's Person of the Year. It was decided that the Person of the Year would be someone who had made a significant, positive impact on Hagerstown and Washington County.

Washington County School Board member Roxanne Ober made history in her first run for office, teaming with Bernadette Wagner to offer the voters a two-for-one deal that touted the duo's combined leadership skills and brainpower. The boards she has served on have racked up some impressive accomplishments. They hired Elizabeth Morgan as superintendent of schools, dealt successfully with the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind Act and were successful in getting the school system's budget fully funded by the Washington County Commissioners.
