andrews@herald-mail.com HAGERSTOWN - When Art Callaham learned he was The Herald-Mail Co.'s 2002 Person of the Year, he cried. The stocky ex-football player, the Vietnam veteran, the executive director of the Greater Hagerstown Committee, the man with a joke and a laugh for all occasions was overcome by the honor, and he cried. After deciding that, no, he hadn't fallen asleep at his desk and dreamed the news, he called his wife, Ruth Anne. "He could hardly get it out," Ruth Anne Callaham said.

The Rev. LeRoy J. Guillory, who promised last year he could bring $185 million in development money to Hagerstown, brought something else this week - a ridiculous charge that Herald-Mail reporter Greg Simmons sent hate letters to several local residents. Guillory's absurd accusation came after Simmons began investigating the reverend's background and that of his organization, Ombudsman International Inc. The charge is ridiculous and nothing more than an attempt to intimidate Simmons and The Herald-Mail.

Rocky and June Bishop of Hagerstown took a photo of this morrel mushroom that they found on their front sidewalk April 14 and thought Herald-Mail readers would like to see it.
