MARTINSBURG, W.Va. - Hedgesville will have to wait another couple of weeks before it gets a new football coach. The announcment was pushed back to Feb. 4's school board meeting. The board was tentatively scheduled to vote on the approval of the coach at Monday's meeting, but it was taken off the agenda. Deputy Superintendent Frank Aliveto said "10 to 12 candidates" were interviewed to replace Dave Lopez, who resigned after last season. Hedgesville principal Don Dellinger conducted the interviews and the field has been narrowed to two finalists.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - Hedgesville's youth brigade is still marching in the Class AAA state tournament. Behind Shawn Moats' 17 points and Brady Catlett's 13 points and 12 rebounds, Hedgesville beat Preston, 69-50, in a quarterfinal Thursday. Hedgesville (13-12), with a roster of five sophomores and four juniors, won for the 11th time in 12 games by outrebounding Preston, 43-37, outscoring it 20-10 from the line and outshooting it 44.9 percent to 30 percent. "Our kids stay in their element," said coach Charlie Scott.

Jefferson girls upset Hedgesville By DAN SPEARS / Staff Writer HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Jefferson's inside tandem of Genelle Botje and Sheron Yates hasn't had the easiest couple of weeks. Thursday night in an Apple Valley League showdown with Hedgesville, point guard Lindsay Edwards made sure both got back into the flow of things. Botje made her first seven shots from the field on her way to a team-high 20 points and Edwards found Yates three times for baskets as the Cougars evened the league race with a 58-49 victory over the No. 10 Eagles.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. ? One person was killed Thursday night when a vehicle struck a tree on Back Creek Valley Road, West Virginia State Police said. The accident was reported about 8:45 p.m. in the 13200 block Back Creek Valley Road in the Tomahawk community, a Berkeley County emergency services dispatch supervisor said. Police still were trying to identify the victim, who was not carrying identification, about 11 p.m., trooper J.S. Chumley said. No other vehicles were involved, he said.

The Bulldogs gave Holmes a team effort Friday night, but not the kind he was looking for. Hedgesville outrebounded, outhustled and simply outplayed Martinsburg as the Eagles ran away with a 79-61 victory in the Class AAA Region II, Section 1 final at Shepherd College. The Eagles (11-12) advance to the regional finals Tuesday against Musselman at Shepherd, with the winner moving on to the state tournament.

A Hedgesville man was found dead Saturday morning next to a car that West Virginia State Police determined went off the road and collided with a tree, according to a news release from state police. Police identified the man as Donovan Travis, 27. State police were notified of a traffic accident with a possible fatality near the 4300 block of Allensville Road at approximately 7:14 a.m. Saturday, the release said. Police found a 2007 Toyota Corolla off the east edge of the road and saw a deceased man lying on the ground near the car's passenger door, the release said.

A Hedgesville, W.Va., man charged with robbing the Walgreens store in Martinsburg on June 22 was arraigned Thursday on additional charges related to his alleged attempt to flee from police after the incident. Jesse Lee Gibson, 27, was arraigned by Berkeley County Magistrate Betty Jo Hersh on single felony counts of fleeing in a vehicle with reckless indifference, attempted malicious wounding and fleeing in a vehicle causing injury, according to magistrate court documents. Gibson also was arraigned on misdemeanor counts of driving while revoked for driving under the influence, obstructing, fleeing on foot, failure to obey traffic signal, no proof of insurance and fleeing in a vehicle causing damage, the court documents said.
