Second-seeded Williamsport erupted for five second-half goals in a 6-0 rout of seventh-seeded and two-time defending region champ Smithsburg in the Maryland Class 1A West quarterfinals.

GOLF ORLANDO, Fla. - The Black Rock quintet led by club pro Dirk Schultz finished in a fifth-place tie following the opening round of the 20th annual Buick Scramble National Finals on Wednesday. Schultz and his amateur partners - Rich Moyer, Denny Lowery, Scott Matheny and Larry Henry - carded a 15-under par 57, three shots behind the leaders from Plum Brook Country Club in Sandusky, Ohio in the gross division, in which 130 teams are competing. "We played the par 5s in 7-under and went 8-under over the last six holes with two eagles," Schultz said.

andrewm@herald-mail.com CLEAR SPRING - North Hagerstown is the defending Washington County champ, Williamsport the last MVAL champ and Smithsburg the reigning Maryland Class 1A West champ. "It says something about Washington County," Williamsport coach Stan Stouffer said. While what exactly will be said about this boys soccer season is far from being determined, the 2003 county crown is already up for grabs, as the Washington County Boys Soccer Tournament kicked off Friday evening.

BOYS SOCCER GREENCASTLE, Pa. - Adam Wiestling scored two goals to lead Greencastle over Boiling Springs, 4-1. Jared Barkdoll and Chris Kiser also scored for the Blue Devils (2-0). James Buchanan 3 Big Spring 2 MERCERSBURG, Pa. - Tyler Pittman scored a goal in each half and Arin Zimmerman added one as James Buchanan downed Big Spring. Adam Heebner stopped 11 shots for James Buchanan (2-1) and Matt Heckman and Josh Pickens had one assist apiece. Shalom 6, Broadfording 0 Joshua Tracy netted a hat trick with three goals, while Aaron Barth had two goals and an assist and Daniel Oakes added a goal for Shalom Christian in a shutout of Broadfording.

PREP FOOTBALL HARRISBURG, Pa. - Vince Beamer scored three touchdowns for McDevitt in a 32-6 win over No. 5 Chambersburg in Mid-Penn Commonwealth Division football action Monday. Beamer returned two punts for scores and had a TD reception from Marcus Stone, who passed for 157 yards and two touchdowns. Mike Goldston had two scores for the Crusaders - a 74-yard TD pass from Stone and a 26-yard TD run. Brad Mann scored on a 19-yard run for Chambersburg (2-5). CLEAR SPRING - Senior Ben McAbee scored a hat trick on Monday night to lead the North Hagerstown Hubs to their fifth straight win, a 6-0 victory over the Clear Spring Blazers in a Washington County high school boys' soccer game. McAbee claimed that North (5-1, No. 3 Herald-Mail Poll) came out ready to go against Clear Spring (2-3-1). "We wanted to come out and show the county that we weren't just a one-time team," McAbee said. "We beat them 4-0 last game. We wanted to come out strong tonight and prove that we could do it again.

Roundup - Middletown works OT to beat Boonsboro GIRLS SOCCER BOONSBORO - No. 2 Middletown had to work twice as hard - literally - to take the Monocacy Valley Athletic League title. Sam Wilson scored four minutes into the first overtime as the Knights kept their perfect season alive with a 1-0 victory over Boonsboro's nine-player defense Tuesday night. "Our goal was 0-0, and through regulation we got it," Boonsboro coach Karen Sornson said. "They played it great.
