PREP ICE HOCKEY The Washington County Northstars went 2-0 on Saturday in the Maryland Divisional State Tournament, routing Gaithersburg 10-0 before defeating Thomas Stone 7-2 in the semifinals. Alex Sweeney had a hat trick to lead the Northstars against Gaithersburg, while Eric Bowers had two goals and three assists and Andrew Lowery added two goals. Mitchell Sirface, Dakota Durning and Keith Koontz also scored, while Sirface, Koontz, Zach Kimmel and Joe Blackwood had two assists each and Andrew Baker and Matthew Stemper each had one assist.

It took Eric Bowers 19 minutes, 25 seconds to finish off a hat trick for the Washington County Northstars on Tuesday evening. For an encore, Bowers produced another hat trick in the third period. He finished with all six Northstars goals in a 6-3 victory over Linganore in a Maryland Scholastic Hockey League Monocacy Valley Conference game at the Hagerstown Ice & Sports Complex. "I got a couple nice passes for a couple nice breaks and finished," Bowers said. "Most of our goals were on fast breaks.

The Williamsport boys soccer team is starting to turn first-year coach Chris Downs' vision into reality. Because of it, the Wildcats were crownded Washington County Tournament champions on Saturday night at Mike Callas Stadium. Michael Reyes wreaked havoc up front on the way to a two-goal night, and Grant Smith added a goal and an assist as Williamsport paid Boonsboro back for a first-round loss with a one-sided 3-0 victory in the boys championship game. BOYS SOCCER BOONSBORO -- Michael Baer scored the tying and eventual winning goal -- both on penalty kicks -- as North Hagerstown rebounded from a 2-1 halftime deficit to defeat Boonsboro 5-3 in a nonconference match on Tuesday. Charlie Brasher, Andreas Grahn, and Roland Wilson each scored a goal, while Wilson and Jeff Smith had an assist each for the Hubs (2-1). Shane Lowery scored twice, Keith Welch added a goal and an assist and Kenny Kopp had an assist for Boonsboro.

Chris Lambert, Mark Connelly and Francesco Scotto di Carlo each had an assist and Harold Little made four saves for the shutout for HCC (3-0, 1-0). CYCLING Lung 15th at Green Mountain WAITSFIELD, Vt. -- Tim Lung, 53, of Hagerstown finished 15th out of 42 in the 50-plus age division at the four-day Green Mountain Stage Race.

CLEAR SPRING - There's little separation in talent and ability between the Williamsport and Boonsboro boys soccer teams. That made the Warriors' struggles to find the net all the more noticeable Saturday in the semifinals of the Washington County Boys Soccer Tournament. Boonsboro held a 17-14 shots advantage and enjoyed several extended stretches of ball control, but it was Williamsport's presence inside the box - anchored by goalie Derek Munro - that allowed the Wildcats to post a 3-1 victory and advance to the tournament finals against Smithsburg, a 4-2 winner over Clear Spring, at School Stadium on Sept.

SAINT JAMES - The St. Maria Goretti girls soccer team picked up its first win of the season in dominant fashion, blanking St. James 8-0 on Saturday. "I am very proud of the team," Goretti coach Dan Durski said. "Everybody played to the best of their ability today. Our girls wanted to win very badly right from the very beginning. They kept that mindset throughout the whole game. " Erica DiMercurio scored three goals for the hat trick to lead the Gaels (1-1-1). "I want to give it as much as I can this year, because this is my senior year," DiMercurio said.

HEDGESVILLE, W.Va. - Senior Kristen Marshall scored three goals Tuesday night, sparking Martinsburg to a 6-0 girls soccer win over Hedgesville. "I was real pleased with the effort," Martinsburg coach Meredith Matczak said. "We were aggressive, beat them to the ball, and generally controlled the game. I hope the intensity we showed tonight carries over for the rest of the season. " Martinsburg (2-1) opened the scoring in the 10th minute when sophomore forward Amy Wright scored on a point-blank shot past Hedgesville goalie Chelsie Oals.
