SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. - In the name of liberal arts, two music professors are giving 19th-century romantic opera a Tim Burton-style makeover. "This is opera the way it's meant to be," said Joseph Regan, the Shepherd University music professor who collaborated with his colleague Bryce Britton on a Generation Next adaptation of Engelbert Humperdinck's "Hansel and Gretel. " The opera debuts Friday, Sept. 24, at the Frank Arts Center Theater and continues through Sunday, Sept. 26. "Hansel and Gretel" is this year's Shepherd University Opera Workshop production, a yearly fall concert that showcases Shepherd's vocal students.

It's January, and I know that for three reasons. The first is that the calendar says so. The second is that it's freezing cold. And the third is that I have to review garbage like "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. This month is notorious for its awful slate of new releases (not to be confused with awards season favorites like "Zero Dark Thirty" that open in limited release the previous year and wait until January to go wide). Studios come down from the holiday rush by releasing the absolute worst of their back catalogue that would get creamed against real competition.

Earlier this year, I had the displeasure of reviewing "Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters. "The R-rated update on the fairy tale made for one of the most miserable moviegoing experiences I've ever had in my life.  So I wasn't exactly thrilled to see another action-packed take (though with a more family-friendly PG-13 rating instead of an R) on a children's classic in "Jack the Giant Slayer. " The film is of course based on "Jack and the Beanstalk," but the adventure elements don't seem out of place.
