OBITUARIES
August 22, 2013
Juanita Mae Shank, 84, of the Ravenwood Nursing Home and formerly of Williamsport, Md., passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center near Hagerstown, Md. She was born Dec. 4, 1928, in Hagerstown to the late Max and Myrtle Biser Spielman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Ross “Kemp” Shank, in 2005. She was a graduate of Hagerstown High School. She was employed by Fleetwood Travel Trailers in Williamsport until  retirement. She was of the Protestant faith.

H. Kline Blevins, 18, of Hagerstown is being laid to rest 63 years after being captured in 1950 while serving in the U.S. Army during the first year of the Korean War. Kline's remains were among those found in the area of the Death Valley prisoner of war camp. Born July 31, 1932, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late William Stuart and Carrie May (Hurley) Blevins. He was a graduate of Hagerstown High School and was an accomplished guitar player before he went to Korea.

Jill Floann (Miller) Conahan, 79, of Hagerstown passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 20, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center. Born Feb. 19, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Ray S. and Gladys (Fogle) Miller. Jill was a 1952 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She was a long-time employee of Ingram's Men's Store and was an accomplished florist at Abbie Jane's Florist. She attended St. Ann's Catholic Church in Hagerstown. Jill was a loving mother and wife. She was an avid gardener, a wonderful cook and took great pride in creating needlepoint masterpieces.

Richard E. Pepple, 75, of Pikeside Drive in Smithsburg, Md., passed away Sunday, Aug. 18, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center. Born Sept. 3, 1937, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Carl Richard and Violet Mae (Monninger) Pepple. He attended Hagerstown High School. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Marine Corps. He was employed over the years by Pangborn, Baker Driveway and PIE. He was a member of Greenbrier Baptist Church, Teamsters Union Local 992 and Funkstown American Legion Post 211, and was a lifetime member of Red Men Tribe 84 and AMVETS Post 10. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Bonnie J. (Seaton)

Ardella May (McKee) Sweigert, 88, of Hagerstown, passed away Sunday, Aug. 11, 2013, at Homewood at Williamsport. Born Nov. 20, 1924, in Beaver Creek, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Lula May (Newcomer) McKee. Ardella was a 1943 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She worked as a secretary for Potomac Edison before she went to work for Washington County Hospital for 15 years in the Central Service Department. She was a member of First Christian Church in Hagerstown, where she served as an elder.

Mr. Henry Eckford McCall, 82, of Hagerstown died Tuesday afternoon, July 30, 2013, at Julia Manor Health Care Center in Hagerstown. Born May 10, 1931, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Elliott H. and Goldie McCall Henninger.  He was a 1949 graduate of Hagerstown High School, and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was employed and retired from the state of Maryland. He was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hagerstown, Dixon-Troxell American Legion Post 211 in Funkstown and Hagerstown Junior Basketball League for more than 50 years.

Julian "Jerry" Linwood Oliver Jr., 82, of 16611 Mosby Drive in Williamsport, Md., passed away Tuesday, July 23, 2013.  He was born Feb. 19, 1931, in Salisbury, Md., and grew up in Hagerstown. He was the son of the late Julian L. Oliver Sr. and Elizabeth Anne Oliver. After graduating from Hagerstown High School, Jerry served four years in the U.S. Navy as an air traffic controller. While he was in the Navy, he met Edna Mae "Eddie" Huffer of Middletown, Md., and they were married Jan. 16, 1954.
