July 26, 2011
MAY 1, 1928-JULY 26, 2011 Frederick Aldine Shank, 83, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away, Tuesday, July 26, 2011, at Ravenwood Lutheran Village. Born Tuesday, May 1, 1928, in Middletown, Md., he was the son of the late Raymond Isaac Shank and the late Anna Hazel Gladhill Shank Eckard. He was a 1947 graduate of Hagerstown High School and later graduated from Columbia Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War. Fred was employed with the Maryland Correctional Institution, retiring after 31 years of service.

H. Darlene Sparaco, 82, of Hagerstown, Md., died Thursday, March 28, 2013, at Meritus Medical Center. Born Oct. 2, 1930, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Truman Carvel and Clara Bell White Smith. She was a 1948 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She was employed by the Washington County Department of Social Services for 43 years, retiring in January 1992. She was a member of Hagerstown Church of the Brethren and Maryland Classified Employees Association.

Leon W. Cross, 84, of Hagerstown, Md., passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at Meritus Medical Center. Born in 1927 in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Hoye William Cross and the late Goldie Viola MacDonald Cross. He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1945. He was employed with M.P. Moller Inc. for 45 years, retiring in 1989 as head finisher. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Merchant Marine. He was a lifelong member of First Christian Church, and a member of Benevolent Protective Order of Elks Lodge 378 and Morris Frock American Legion Post 42. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Fleming and husband, Steven, of Shippensburg, Pa. He was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Marie Cross, in 1998, and his brother, Howard Edwin Cross.

Atlee “Junior” Barkdoll Sheiss Jr., 75, of Boonsboro, Md., passed from this life on Sunday, April 28, 2013, at his home. Born on Sept. 3, 1937, in Waynesboro, Pa., he was the son of the late Atlee B. Sheiss Sr. and Ruth L. (Rhines) Sheiss. He was preceded in death by his companion, Mary E. Hepner, on April 14, 2013. Atlee was a 1956 graduate from Hagerstown High School and he was a veteran of the United States Air Force. Atlee worked as a brick mason for more than 50 years.

JUNE 30, 1938-JAN. 19, 2009 MAUGANSVILLE - Dolores Jeanette Breeden Gossard, 70, of Leona Avenue, died Monday, Jan. 19, 2009, at Washington County Hospital. Born June 30, 1938, in Maugansville, she was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Helen Breeden. She was a 1956 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She retired from the Washington County Health Department after more than 20 years as a home-health nurse and in the well-baby clinic. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Hagerstown.

JULY 4, 1937-MAY 7, 2011 Nancy Lee Renner, 73, of 260 Frederick St. in Hagerstown, Md., died Saturday, May 7, 2011, at her home. Born July 4, 1937, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Goldie Clark Ragland. She was preceded in death by her companion of 35 years, Ronald E. Brown Sr., in 2004. Nancy was a 1955 graduate of Hagerstown High School. She retired in 2006 from Washington County Hospital after 32 years of service. She was a member of the Owls Club.

OCT. 8, 1933-JULY 17, 2007 Donald S. Wakenight, 73, of 18704 Mesa Terrace, Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, July 17, 2007, at Washington County Hospital. Born Oct. 8, 1933, in Hagerstown, he was the son of the late Leonard F. and Catherine Stine Wakenight. He was single. He was a member of the National Guard in the 1950s. He graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1951. He worked for R. D. McKee for many years, Motor Travel Service, and his last 22 years for Blue Ridge Fasteners, before retirement.

Born Jan. 23, 1932, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Edgar M. Foltz Sr. and Margaret B. Bailey Foltz. She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Charles Edward Holden, on Sept. 15, 2007. She was a 1951 graduate of Hagerstown High School. Janice retired in 1997 from Washington County Hospital after 28 years of service.

Born June 18, 1923, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Raymond C. and Mable G. Stouffer Beard. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Delosier, in 1965. She graduated from Hagerstown High School in 1941. She was employed in the law office of Omer T. Kaylor Jr. and Sr. as a secretary. She was also employed with Catholic Charities.

Born Oct. 25, 1931, in Hagerstown, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Zettie (Turner) Wetzel. She attended Hagerstown High School. She was employed by Porter Chemical Co. of Hagerstown. She was a member of American Legion Post 211, Funkstown, Md. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clarence Samuel Hottle, on Dec. 24, 1964, and her second husband, Roy Eugene Shindle, on Feb. 6, 2002.
