Sunday, April 14, 2013 COLLEGE BASEBALL Potomac State 5, HCC 2 Tanner Everton struck out 10 over 8 1/3 innings, and Jamie Miller came on in the ninth with two runners on and struck out the final two hitters to give Potomac State (22-10) a victory over Hagerstown Community College on Sunday. Garrett Sprankle drove in both runs for the Hawks (25-19) with a sacrifice fly in the fourth and a single in the sixth. Devin Schaeffer was the only player with two hits for HCC. COLLEGE TRACK HCC men finish second MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The Hagerstown Community College men's team finished second in the team standings Saturday at the Messiah Invitational at Messiah College.

Since Hagerstown Community College received a $1.25 million U.S. Department of Education grant to start an Upward Bound program in fall 2012, 48 local high school students have been recruited to participate. The free program is designed to increase the high school graduation and college completion rates of low-income or first-generation college students. HCC is working in partnership with Washington County Public Schools to enhance evolving curricular changes that are designed to result in higher college attendance rates.

Q: I haven't heard anything yet this year about Small Business Month at either national, state or local levels. Are there any events planned? A : According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, the signature National Small Business Week will be June 17 to 21. This year's events will take place across the country and will feature exciting and informative events designed to help small businesses start, grow and succeed. Locally, area residents are encouraged to participate in SCORE Hagerstown's Small Business Community Awareness Program, principally during the months of April and May. Scheduled events include: • Educational workshops at Hagerstown Community College.

University System of Maryland at Hagerstown senior Samantha Sines is expecting to graduate this spring so she's looking for a job. In preparation for job interviews, Sines participated last month in mock interviews with business people who gave her feedback about how she was answering questions, what she was wearing, and about her resume, she said. On Monday, Sines put what she'd learned to work as she interviewed for elementary school teaching positions with public school systems in Washington and Frederick counties.

Sunday, April 7, 2013 COLLEGE BASEBALL Hagerstown 11, Chesapeake 5 Garrett Sprankle had two hits and four RBIs for Hagerstown Community College in a victory over Chesapeake on Sunday. The Hawks (22-17) rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie. Cooper Ayers had three hits and an RBI for HCC, while Drew DeShong had two hits and two RBIs, Tyler Walter had two hits and an RBI, Eric Schanzenbacher had two hits and starter Tanner Partlow (7-1)

With twinkling lights hanging from the ceiling, an arena that normally hosts athletic events was transformed Friday night into a venue of celebration for generosity and philanthropy to higher education in Washington County. Billed as one of the largest fundraisers in the county, about 750 people came together inside the Athletic, Recreation and Community Center at Hagerstown Community College for an annual event put on by the HCC Foundation and the HCC Booster Club. “I think this is the premiere event annually in Washington County in regard to raising funds for a terrific cause,” HCC President Guy Altieri said of the 14th annual fundraiser.
