Q: Small Business Month is this month. Does SCORE Hagerstown have any public events scheduled that you can tell us about? A: Yes!  Thursday is SCORE's business roundtable, featuring Hagerstown's Downtown Manager Andrew Sargent, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Always Ron's, 29 N. Burhans Blvd. in Hagerstown. The event is free; lunch is available for purchase. Sargent will share plans and programs the city has to assist startup and existing businesses. Bring your questions and concerns to share in this open-forum discussion.

Washington County Health Department Elaine Rose was named the Washington County Health Department's Employee of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2013. Rose began working with the health department in 1979 with the Environmental Health Division, where she worked until 2001, before transferring to administrative duties with the Office of the Health Officer. Since 2001, she has performed many duties, working closely with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene's state office to implement and oversee the local administration of numerous mandated internal programs.

Washington County officials will give the public a chance to comment on next year's proposed budget Tuesday night at Hagerstown Community College's Kepler Theater. A budget presentation by County Administrator Gregory B. Murray will begin at 7 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session with Murray and the Washington County Board of Commissioners set to start at about 7:30 p.m. The proposed spending plan includes a total operating budget of $245.9 million, with $201.1 million balanced in the taxpayer-supported General Fund.

Jeanette Snyder, 58, of 1065 Beechwood Drive, Hagerstown, Md., passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013, at her home. Born Sunday, Sept. 26, 1954, in New Brunswick, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Campbell and the late Bernice (Coon) Campbell. She graduated from South Hagerstown High School in 1973 and from Hagerstown Community College in 1975. She was employed at several department stores, including Bon-Ton, Sears and Walmart. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a volunteer at St. Mary Catholic School, especially with St. Mary's Home School Association.

Washington County lawmakers are hosting a public forum Thursday evening to discuss the 2013 legislative session of the Maryland General Assembly and answer queries from residents. The post-legislative forum, which is being held at Hagerstown Community College, gives constituents a chance to question county lawmakers. “This is our chance to have an open and transparent government so that citizens of the county who have questions can ask them,” said Del. Andrew A. Serafini, R-Washington, chairman of the Washington County delegation.

As the longtime president of a Hagerstown furniture manufacturing company, David C. Beachley has seen a lot of curves and sharp edges in the numbers that define his business. The worst of the extremes in the number of people he employs has come fairly recently. “We went from 65 to 14 (workers) pretty quick during the recession,” Beachley said late last month. “It was pretty rough there for a while.” But now, because of big changes in the kinds of furniture his employees were willing to learn to make, Beachley Furniture Co. Inc. has not only survived the recession, but is hiring again.

Hagerstown Seventh-day Adventist Church will host a concert Saturday at 7 p.m., featuring Herman and Sonnie Harp.  The Chapel Records recording artists are one of the Christian community's finest duos. They present a variety of music that features solo, duets and the original songs of Sonnie Harp. In addition to more than 100 concerts annually, they are seen daily on 3ABN, Hope Channel and the Family Reunion Concert Series.
