His family vineyards date back to the 1720s and span five estates. He is a 13th-generation vintner. Wine is in his blood, and when he speaks, Pierluigi Giachi pours forth his passion on the subject. "It's the protocol of the glass. It is a glass. It is not a boccie ball. It is not an umbrella," Giachi said Sunday evening at a Hagerstown Garden Club wine tasting at Younger Toyota. Giachi spoke rapidly with a thick Italian accent, and indicated that the wine glass should be held with the base between the second and third fingers, not palmed like a ball or double-handed like an umbrella.

HAGERSTOWN ? Like Santa Claus acknowledging his reindeer, Hagerstown Mayor Robert E. Bruchey II called out each light display at City Park just before it illuminated. "The penguin!" On came the lights. "And the skating bear!" The kickoff to Friday's festival was the lighting of a blue spruce donated by Sara Dickey of Hagerstown. It stood at least 20 feet tall, smack in the middle of the lake. "We have the only tree that floats, ladies and gentlemen," quipped NBC25 weatherman Lou Scally, the master of ceremonies.

Some park locales also have historic significance to the city and beyond. At the side of City Park is Jonathan Hager's first home in Western Maryland.

On June 16 and 17, around 500 visitors were treated to a family event in Hagerstown City Park at the fourth annual Art in the Park, sponsored by the Contemporary School of the Arts and Gallery. The event has grown over the years from an initial vision by CSAGI founder Ron Lytle to a true community event, perfect for the Father's Day weekend. The event would not have been possible if not for the generous support of all the sponsors; the volunteer performances by all the singers, musicians and dancers; all the exhibitors, and especially the hundreds of visitors.
