GROVE CITY, Pa. - Grove City College student Brian Sandell, a senior from Boonsboro, has been named to the 2009 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. This recognition is based on academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success. The annual directory was first published in 1934.

Bayer-Vile Larry and Susan Bayer of Hagerstown announce the engagement of their daughter, Julie Elizabeth Bayer, to Douglas J. Vile, son of Jonathan and Helen Vile of Cape May, N.J. Ms. Bayer is a 2004 graduate of North Hagerstown High School and will graduate from Salisbury University in May with a bachelor's degree in clinical laboratory science. Mr. Vile is a 2004 graduate of Lower Cape May Regional High School and will graduate from Salisbury University in May with a bachelor's degree in physics.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -- The Franklin County (Pa.) Commissioners on Tuesday announced Mary Beth Shank will become their new solicitor effective Jan. 4. Shank replaces Shawn Meyers, who was elected to a judge position for the 39th District of the Court of Common Pleas. Shank, a partner in the law firm of Sharpe & Sharpe, has served as an assistant solicitor in the county since January 2006, according to a news release. Shank attended Penn State University's Dickinson School of Law and Grove City College.

GREENCASTLE, Pa. - The Greencastle-Antrim Education Foundation awarded eight scholarships to local students at its annual celebration banquet at the Antrim House Restaurant last week. The Ambassador Award Scholarship, given to a graduating senior from the Greencastle-Antrim community who has demonstrated leadership through community service activities, was awarded to Sarah Jo Louzon, a senior at Greencastle-Antrim High School. She will receive up to $10,000 - $2,500 per year - for her college education at Grove City College.

One is exposing his soul through poetry and the other is trying to get people to re-evaluate their souls through a fictional novel. Khary H. Tolliver of Hagerstown has had his second book of poems published, "More Poems from Khary's Poem Journal: My Thoughts, My Feelings. " Brian D. Sandell from Boonsboro has written a religious suspense thriller that delves into what makes people happy - personal relationships or material possessions. We live in a society that is largely materialistic and that's not making people happy, said Sandell, 21, a junior at Grove City College in Grove City, Pa., where he studies Christian ministries.

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Glory Sterling of Mercersburg, Pa., was selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and College. Sterling is a senior secondary English education major. Sterling is a 2002 graduate of James Buchanan High School in Mercersburg, and is the daughter of Thomas and Joyce Cook of Mercersburg. ERIE, Pa. - Steven Savoy of Hagerstown joined the cast of “Anatomy of Gray,” the spring production of the Studio Theatre at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

INWOOD, W.Va. - Despite the blustery weather on Sunday afternoon, the 14th annual South Berkeley Christmas Parade was filled with about 212 entries, including Miss West Virginia 2008 Kayla Lynam and Girl Scout Troop 188, whose members were dressed as angels aboard their Spirit of Christmas float. Co-chairs Frank and Darla Rutherford have been organizing the Christmas celebration for 13 years, Darla Rutherford said. The events include the parade, a banquet and the tree-lighting celebration, which was held separately.
