GOLF SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. -- Beaver Creek professional Dirk Schultz shot an even-par 71 in the opening round of the 42nd annual PGA of American Professional National Championship on Sunday. Shultz opened with two bogeys before getting to 1-under on the front nine. He opened the back nine with two bogeys and a late birdie pushed his score to level, good for a 41st-place tie. Schultz played on the Santa Ana Golf Club course and will move over to Twin Warriors Club in today's second round.

WILLIAMSPORT -- Joey Miller hit a grand slam and finished with five RBIs as Funkstown Post 211 beat Williamsport Post 202 16-8 in a Western Maryland District American Legion baseball game Friday night. Funkstown (6-1, 5-1), which is in first place in the district, got on the scoreboard first with four runs in the top of the first inning on an RBI single to center by Miller and a three-run homer to right by Dwight Boward. However, Williamsport (4-5, 3-5) proved that it was going to make things interesting for at least a little while, scoring all eight of its runs in the bottom of the first to take an 8-4 lead.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. -- Junior cornerback/return specialist Deante Steele of Shepherd University has been named to the 2009 Lindy's Preseason All-America team. Steele earned second-team honors as a defensive back. He recorded 49 tackles (35 solo), 10 pass breakups and four interceptions last season. Steele also returned 20 punts for 404 yards and two touchdowns with a 20.2 average to rank second nationally in that category. He added 17 kickoff returns for 491 yards and a pair of touchdowns with a 28.9 average to rank 11th nationally.

With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Tyler Moore hit a two-run single to left to give the Hagerstown Suns a 5-4 win over the West Virginia Power in the first game of a doubleheader split Sunday at Municipal Stadium. Each game was a seven-inning contest. The Suns (12-15) took a 3-2 lead in the first game on a three-run homer by Stephen Lombardozzi in the fifth inning off Power starter Gabriel Alvarado. Nick Arata, Aaron Seuss and Lombardozzi each finished with two of the Suns' 11 hits.

COLLEGE BASEBALL WYE MILLS, Md. -- Spencer Cromer threw a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Hagerstown Community College to an 11-1 win over Chesapeake on Friday in the first round of the Region XX Tournament. Zach Smith hit a grand slam in the bottom of the sixth for HCC to end the game on the 10-run rule. Tay Sidler had three hits, while Smith, John Barrett, Justin Everhart and Adam Brunk each had two hits for the Hawks (38-15). One of Everhart's hits was a home run. PREP BASEBALL MERCERSBURG, Pa. --Â Danny Phillips had three hits, including a grand slam, and finished with six RBIs as No. 7 Mercersburg Academy held off No. 3 Martinsburg 10-8 on Thursday. Matt Timoney pitched a strong game for the Blue Storm (11-1), striking out nine over six innings and picking up the win. The Bulldogs rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh, highlighted by Austin Nealey's grand slam. Kameron Puller had four hits for the Bulldogs (17-8)

HAGERSTOWN -- At Denny's on Tuesday, the bases were loaded and so were the plates. The chain restaurant offered its signature Grand Slam breakfast meal free to all Americans Tuesday between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Customers crowded around tables and in booths, smearing butter on stacks of hot pancakes with their plates full of eggs and bacon. Allan Buckalew, general manager for the Hagerstown Denny's on Dual Highway, said all his employees were working Tuesday to accommodate the crowd.
