HANCOCK - Senior Trey Cobb contributed in many ways on Monday afternoon. Cobb started the St. Maria Goretti Gaels' eight-run rally in the top of the first inning with a leadoff double to left field and then capped it with a grand slam to left. cont. from sports page At the plate, Cobb had RBI, three runs scored, three hits and two stolen bases. On the pitcher's mound, Cobb gave up only one earned run and two hits, while striking out 11 batters, in five innings to get a complete-game win. All of those things helped the Gaels to get a 13-2 victory over the Hancock Panthers.

Boom! That's all you have to know to sum up the second half of the Hagerstown Suns' season. Thursday night was the classic example. Joe Napoli up with bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth. He locks in on a Cody Bunkelman fastball and ... Napoli's bat shatters on contact and out of the flying timber came a watered down ground ball to first. Step on the bag. Game over in the seventh straight loss to open the second half. Hagerstown continued to slump - both offensively and defensively - as Lake County snatched the game early behind Beau Mills' third-inning grand slam to keep the Suns sinking in the quagmire with a 10-4 loss.

Bowser struck out five, Chris Grove hit a grand slam and Colby Thompson had two hits for Funkstown, which finished the season 26-4 and won the Mid-Maryland League Championsip. YOUTH LEAGUES Hagerstown PONY League Redmen 9, UAW 5: Joey Siler had two hits, including a walk-off grand slam in the seventh inning for Redmen. Andy Taylor, Derrick Keith and Bowers each had two hits to lead the winners. Halfway 5, Oakland 1: Winning pitcher Nick Adenhart tossed a four-hitter with 16 strikeouts to lead Halfway. Tyler Jones had two hits and David Warrenfeltz added a home run for Halfway.

Monday, July 16, 2012 YOUTH BASEBALL CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Xavier Dominguez had three hits, including a game-tying grand slam and a game-winning two-run double, as West End defeated Brunswick 12-11 in a winners' bracket semifinal at the Maryland State 10-11 Little League Tournament. West End will face Berlin - last year's 9-10 state champions - in the winners' bracket final tonight at 5:30. The semifinal was started Sunday, with West End holding a 5-0 lead with one out in the top of the second inning when rain forced a suspension.

It was so enjoyable the first time, Christian Binford decided to give an encore performance. For the second time in three days, Binford struck out 15 Chambersburg American batters for a complete-game victory to lift Hagerstown 'A' to an 11-3 win for the PONY League sectional tournament Monday at Funkhouser Park. Hagerstown advances to the regionals, which begin Sunday in Boardman, Ohio. "During the second time that I was facing that team, they were more able to hit my pitches," Binford said.

Santos slams; Suns sweep ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Deivi Santos hit the first grand slam of the season for Hagerstown as the Suns beat the Asheville Tourists 6-2 Sunday in the completion of a suspended game in the South Atlantic League. continued Bryan Carter homered and Derek Bell drove in two runs as the Suns won Sunday's regularly scheduled game, 4-3. Santos' grand slam, his second homer of the year, broke a 2-2 tie in the top of the seventh inning. Elliott Strankman led off with a double and went to third on a single by Jason Ellison.

FAYETTEVILLE, Pa. - Doug Mongan found the best remedy for Hagerstown Braves manager Danny Cunningham's aching back. Like two hits, including a three-run home run. EASTON, Md. - Federal Little League's 11-12 All-Stars returned to the Maryland State Tournament with its bats loaded on Saturday. Making its second straight trip to states, Federal made a grand case as a tournament favorite by blasting South Maryland, from Davidsonville, 30-0 in 3 1/2 innings. Today, Federal will take on Frederick National, a 10-0 winner over Hughesville. The game can be heard online at www.eteamz.com/sundaysportspage . Federal's Zane Schreiber led the onslaught with four hits, including three home runs, and 11 RBIs.
