Monday, July 16, 2012 YOUTH BASEBALL CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Xavier Dominguez had three hits, including a game-tying grand slam and a game-winning two-run double, as West End defeated Brunswick 12-11 in a winners' bracket semifinal at the Maryland State 10-11 Little League Tournament. West End will face Berlin - last year's 9-10 state champions - in the winners' bracket final tonight at 5:30. The semifinal was started Sunday, with West End holding a 5-0 lead with one out in the top of the second inning when rain forced a suspension.

Rodriguez's slam leaves Suns dazed AUGUSTA, Ga. - For the second straight game, Augusta first baseman Carlos Rodriguez played a game of "can you top this?" against the entire Suns team. For the second straight game, not only did Hagerstown fall short, it wasn't even close. Rodriguez's grand slam in the fifth inning Thursday, his third home run in the last two games, was the decisive blow in an 8-0 Greenjackets romp, the Suns' fifth straight loss. It isn't difficult to pick out the "short straw" on the team of 11- and 12-year-olds. Hitless in four previous at-bats, Sims smashed a grand slam in the top of the sixth inning that propelled East Frederick past Hughesville 16-12 in the losers' bracket final of the Maryland Little League Tournament on Wednesday. East Frederick, which watched Hughesville take a 12-8 lead with an eight-run fifth inning, moves into the championship bracket against South Caroline tonight at 6, hoping to avenge a 3-2 loss in the opening round.

LEGION BASEBALL CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. - Andy Taylor hit a grand slam and a three-run double for seven RBI Sunday in a 16-6 win in the second game to lift Funkstown Post 202 to doubleheader sweep of Charles Town. Funkstown took a 3-1 victory in the opener. Taylor hit his grand slam in Funkstown's five-run first inning and added the bases-loaded double in the seven-run seventh to shut down Charles Town in six innings. Matt Tedrick, who finished with three hits and four RBI, hit a three-run home run in the sixth.

Hagerstown 'A' scored six runs in the first inning Saturday to set the tone for a 14-1 win in five innings that eliminated Chambersburg Suburban American from the PONY League East Zone Tournament at Funkhouser Park. Western Branch of Chesapeake, Va., later beat Bergen Beach of Brooklyn, N.Y., 14-4 in six innings, in a winners' bracket game. Western Branch remained undefeated and advanced to today's championship round of the four-team, double elimination tournament. Western Branch will play at noon against Hagerstown, a 9-8 winner over Bergen Beach in Saturday's late game.

The Lake County Captains beat the Hagerstown Suns 8-5 Friday night, extending the Suns' losing streak to 12 in their final home game of the season at Municipal Stadium. The Suns (20-47), who lost 13 of 16 games against the Captains (36-30), end their season with a three-game series at Lexington, beginning today. Lakewood rallied for six runs in the fourth inning to go up, 7-0. Kevin Kouzmanoff started the rally with a solo home run and Ryan Goleski capped it with a two-run double.

Justin Maxwell's grand slam highlighted a six-run second inning Sunday for the Hagerstown Suns, who went on to beat the Delmarva Shorebirds 10-0 at Municipal Stadium. After Maxwell's four-run shot to center field off Delmarva starter Josh Tamba (0-1) gave the Suns a 5-0 lead, the next batter, Alex Nunez, homered to right. Christopher Marrero's two-run homer to center in the fifth made it 9-0. The Suns scored their final run in the eighth on an RBI single by Nunez. Brett McMillan, Marcos Cabral and Nunez each had two of Hagerstown's nine hits.

LEGION BASEBALL BELLEFONTE, Pa. - Funkstown Legion Post 211 beat host Bellefonte 16-2 and tied the Maryland Monarchs 5-5 at the Bellefonte Bandit Showdown on Friday. Matt Allen had two hits, including a grand slam, in the rout of Bellefonte, while Gerry Spessard had three hits, including a home run, for Funkstown (8-5-1). David Miner hit a two-run homer for Post 211 against the Monarchs. PREP TRACK Schuler finishes 21st at adidas meet RALEIGH, N.C. - Chambersburg's Kylee Schuler placed 21st in the girls 2-mile run in 11:03.
