PREP BASEBALL Musselman goes 1-3 at Bridgeport tourney BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. - Musselman split a pair of games Friday before falling twice Saturday at the Birdgeport Tournament. The Applemen scored 12 runs in the seventh inning to answer Robert C. Byrd's nine-run sixth and score a wild 20-16 victory Friday. Ricky Frame went 4-for-4 with four RBIs, Mark Darlington and Ethan French each had three hits and Darlington had five RBIs. Musselman fell 8-2 to Bridgeport on Friday, then lost 8-2 to Morgantown and 13-0 to Fairmont Senior on Saturday.

OCT. 17, 1937-AUG. 25, 2009 HAGERSTOWN - Maurice McPherson Barnhart, 71, of Potomac Towers of Hagerstown, Md., died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, at his home. Born Oct. 17, 1937, in Hagerstown, Md., to the late Gerald Abraham and Grace Viola Wells Barnhart. He was preceded in death by his former wife, Donna R. Selby Barnhart, in 2005. He was a 1955 graduate of Hagerstown High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was employed as a brick and stone mason for various contractors in the Tri-State area.

Dice Sr., age 69, of 9080 Tea Drive, Mercersburg, Pa., died at 6 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2009, in ManorCare Health Services of Chambersburg, Pa. Born June 5, 1940, in Brownsfield, Pa., he was the son of the late Omer and Mary (Fisher) Dice. He was a charter bus driver for Eyre Bus Lines of Glenelg, Md. Wally was a U.S. Air Force veteran, having served from 1958 to 1964. He and his wife, Louann M. (Surguy)

Smithburg meets Oakland Mills in semis SMITHSBURG - Jim Klein will admit that he's prone to changing his mind from time to time, and that's certainly a fact that pleases his Smithsburg volleyball team. continued Three years ago last week, after the Leopards were swept in the Class 1A Regional finals by Glenelg, Klein announced to the team that he would likely be resigning to dedicate more time to his family. Knights shine on at Interstate meet By JACK HILL III / Staff Correspondent CLEAR SPRING - For the Middletown girls cross country team, it's just like climbing a ladder. At the end of last season, the Middletown girls were ranked No. 22 in the country. They began this season at No. 15 in this year's preseason All-America poll. The Knights continued to shine on Saturday as they won both the big school girls team and individual titles in the Interstate Classic at Clear Spring High School.

Roundup - Top-seeded North hangs on BOYS SOCCER GERMANTOWN, Md. - Tim Salvagno's goal busted a 1-1 tie for North Hagerstown, as the top-rated Hubs beat Seneca Valley 2-1 Wednesday night in the quarterfinals of the Maryland Class 3A West playoffs. Mike Brooks earlier scored for North (15-1, No. 2 Herald-Mail poll) from Dustin Showalter to get the Hubs on the board. Keeper David Chaney recorded five saves. North, South boys draw No. 1 seeds GAMBRILLS, Md. - Five teams from Washington and Frederick counties drew No. 1 seeds when the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association held its basketball playoff draw Sunday morning at Arundel High School. The regional playoffs begin with girls first round games Friday and boys first round games on Saturday. The girls quarterfinals, semifinals and finals are Feb. 25 and 27 and March 1. The boys quarters, semis and finals are Feb. 26 and 28 and March 2.
