The Washington Nationals aren't conceding anything to the Atlanta Braves, except perhaps for this: At this point in the season, it's pretty obvious which team is better than the other. Justin Upton and Andrelton Simmons homered to back a sparkling pitching performance by Paul Maholm, and the Braves beat Washington 9-0 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of their NL East rivals. After forging two-run victories on Friday and Saturday, Atlanta took a 7-0 lead in the third inning against Gio Gonzalez (1-1)

Wilson Ramos drove in three runs, Gio Gonzalez won his third straight start and the Washington Nationals defeated the San Diego Padres 8-5 Friday night. Jayson Werth had three hits and Denard Span added a two-run double for Washington, which has won two straight. Ramos has driven in eight runs in two games since coming off the disabled list on Thursday. Chase Headley homered, doubled and drove in two runs, and Carlos Quentin had a three-run homer for the Padres, who've lost seven straight.

Hanley Ramirez doubled to highlight a two-run 10th inning Saturday night, and the Los Angeles Dodgers used seven pitchers to again tame the tepid offense of the Washington Nationals in a 3-1 victory. Adrian Gonzalez led off the 10th with a double off Craig Stammen (5-5). Ramirez followed immediately with an RBI double for his third hit of the night, then scored two batters later on Andre Ethier's sacrifice fly. Ethier won Friday's game with a ninth-inning homer, and the first two games of the series yielded outcomes that kept the teams trending in opposite directions.

Gio Gonzalez showed that he's better than his last two outings. After giving up 12 runs in nine innings over those two starts, Gonzalez pitched a gem on Thursday night. The right-hander held Cincinnati's powerful lineup to one hit in eight innings and the Washington Nationals beat the Reds 8-1. Denard Span and Danny Espinosa drove in three runs apiece, giving Gonzalez more than enough support. The 21-game winner from last season struck out seven and walked two. By the time Joey Votto homered for Cincinnati, Gonzalez (2-1)

Stephen Strasburg is ready for his first big league season without restrictions. Ready to go from season's start to finish. Ready to throw as many pitches as it takes and to stay on the mound as long as possible, including into the eighth and ninth inning, something he's never done in the majors. It all begins Monday, when All-Star ace Strasburg starts the season opener for the defending NL East champion Washington Nationals against a Miami Marlins club that traded away most of its best players, cut its payroll by more than half, starts with seven players on the disabled list and has a rookie manager in Mike Redmond.

This time, Bryce Harper made the catch. And yeah, it was a relief. Harper made a game-saving grab in right field and had a couple of big hits at the plate to help the Washington Nationals beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 in 10 innings on Wednesday. San Francisco had runners on first and second with one out in the eighth when Harper had to dive to grab Hunter Pence's sinking liner in the gap, keeping it tied at 1. He banged up his left knee on the play, but managed to stay in the game.

Stephen Strasburg won a duel with Cole Hamels, Bryce Harper aggravated a knee, and the Washington Nationals managed to score five runs in an inning for the first time this season. Still, it is not enough for Davey Johnson to start shaving. Sunday's 6-1 win kept Washington above .500 and ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL East. Strasburg (3-5), who has pitched better than his record indicates, struck out a season-high nine and walked one in eight innings. Philadelphia scored its only run in the eighth on Strasburg's first big league balk.

Ian Desmond was one close call away from his fourth strikeout of the night before he got another chance. He didn't miss it. Desmond hit a grand slam in the 11th inning and the Washington Nationals beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-2 Wednesday night, avoiding a three-game sweep. Jayson Werth's RBI single with two outs in the ninth tied it off Jonathan Papelbon, who blew a save for the second time in three nights after starting the season 13 for 13. Starters Kyle Kendrick and Gio Gonzalez both were outstanding, but wound up with no-decisions.

As a .179 career hitter, Tim Hudson doesn't expect much when he steps to the plate. After pulling off the unlikely feat of hitting a homer in his 200th career win, Hudson concluded “The stars were aligned and it was meant to be.” Hudson was a dual threat in his milestone win, dominating on the mound over seven innings and  hitting a homer and a double to lead the Atlanta Braves to an 8-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday night....

Tyler Moore knew what Clint Hurdle was thinking. With one out and first base open in the eighth inning of a one-run game, Moore fully expected the Pittsburgh Pirates' manager to intentionally walk the batter in front of him. Moore was hitting .158 and had struck out six times in the three-game series. “It fires you up,” Moore said. “I would have done the same thing.” The move backfired, though, as Moore followed the walk to Adam LaRoche by hitting a three-run homer off rookie reliever Bryan Morris to seal the Washington Nationals' 6-2 victory over the Pirates on Sunday.

Gio Gonzalez was inches from a no-hitter and the Washington Nationals hit five home runs Monday night, including long balls by their first two batters, in a 9-0 rout of the New York Mets. Gonzalez held the overmatched Mets hitless into the seventh before pinch-hitter Zach Lutz broke up the bid with a soft single for New York's only hit. Lutz swung at the first pitch of the inning and hit a looper that landed on the first base line, taking out a chunk of chalk well behind the bag. First baseman Adam LaRoche made a diving attempt as the ball hit the dirt, but it squirted by and into foul territory along the right field line.

Gio Gonzalez loves how the Washington Nationals are playing right now, and it's easy to see why. Gonzalez pitched seven crisp innings and Washington slugged three homers in a 9-0 victory over the sliding Miami Marlins on Thursday night. "We're getting our groove back," Gonzalez said. "I think that you can see it live, and the chemistry in here is just getting better and better. I think it's the music choice. I don't know what it is, but I think that our guys out there are having more fun up there at the plate.

Hit by a pitch two innings after homering, Bryce Harper jawed and pointed at Atlanta's Julio Teheran, and the dugouts and bullpens emptied, but the only haymakers thrown during the NL East-leading Braves' 2-1 victory over the Nationals on Tuesday night came from the teams' Twitter feeds. All in all, it was the sort of stuff rivalries and high-drama playoff chases are made of. Except, in this particular case, Evan Gattis' two-run single in the fifth inning and the six innings thrown by Teheran (9-5)
